Dealers Clocking Cars!

I know this is probably a sensitive subject but ...here goes...
I have recently been told by a dealer that at least 25% of all pre-1st MOT dealer cars, demonstrators/part ex's etc have been 'clocked'. All dealers have a 'clocker' and that since the advent of analogue clocks it has become a cinch to do, a 'matter of minutes with a laptop'.
I'm not trolling here I just thought I'd ask you lot if he's talking bol
locks or is there truth in his claim?

locks or is there truth in his claim?Whilst the advent of digital dashes has made it easier to misrepresent a cars mileage, it is pretty rare amongst the established traders. Its just not worth the risk to clock one (or more) vehicles for a bigger profit, most traders will just buy them in at the right price and then sell it on.
I have no doubt small traders with limited stock and people selling cars from home/side of the road would be much more likely to alter the mileage...

it's prob true tbh.
I have spoken to plenty of MOT testers who would agree with this, however for cars over 8 years this will probbo be significantly more.
thing is though, there is an argument to say that without clocking, then the used car industry would collapse. but I won't go into that here

Same.It's really near on impossible to do. When we fit a new dash, we can't adjust the mileage at all, meaning the car starts back at 0 miles.

From what I gather locally its often the owners( leasing) that do this to keep within the agreed mileage limit and avoid the penalty.
How many people really only do 8-10k miles in daily drivers?
£60 to get the mileage adjusted......personally I think it's not on.

The dealers I worked in the past definitely didn't. I'm pretty sure anything they did on the mfr's equip meant it reset. That's not to say third party computers couldn't do it, but it's not really worth risking your reputation hiring in a third party 'clocker' - who by nature is not likely to be trust worthy.
Also I thought that anytime a car has a service???? or a MOT at a 'main' dealer the milage was recorded on the NMR so the most they could probably wind it back without looking dodgy is 10k probably more like 5. 20k absolute max On some cars but then the history would look a bit weird.
That's ignoring that they also try confirm it everytime a car changes keeper.
The only other benefit is they could then maybe avoid doing a service that was due - but how much is that at dealers cost?
Doubtless it goes on but to suggest it's rife is a bit far fetched. Franchised dealers almost certainly wouldn't risk it.
