Son's 18th coming up, thinking of among other things a 'new' watch in the family and my ideas about watches are probably a bit different to the younger persons; lets say around £1500-£2000 budget, new or second hand ideas for a younger person.

Over to you.

I bought my son the limited edition Tag F1 for the year he was 18, he loves it as it was the ferrari Kimi R edition that year!

Depends what kind of a style he has really, I'm 21 years and I have a more mature taste, however if your going for the funky and trendy route may I suggest Bell & Ross. He would be the coolest kid in school with a watch like that biggrin

If I were you, id take him shopping and share the experience, I think it would be far more special, just ask him to go out with you to the shops, take him to a jewellers with a wide variety and shock/suprise him with the news that today he is going to get his first propper timepiece. I'll give you a tenner if he isnt beaming from ear to ear!..just make sure he knows the budget and ask the jeweller to show you a selection for the price smile

This.

For my 21st me and the old man went into town and had a good blokes shopping day - spent the morning looking at and then buying a watch and the afternoon buying pints.

Ended up getting a Tag Aquaracer, which is pretty dull compared to a lot of the bling on here (and when looking at your higher budget) but it means a lot more to me than it would do otherwise.

Mmm. Does he like James Bond films? If so, has to be a Bond watch (probably not the Rolex sub at your budget hehe).

I would say not a TAG because I don't rate them as a watchmaker. They are just make fashion watches in my opinion.

Many thanks for ideas so far; would love to take him shopping but watch is going to be a surprise alongside his main present I think. Are Omega's good watches and are they cool? I like the look of them but don't know much about them, being more a Breitling/Rolex man myself. Was thinking about maybe instead getting him a Hublot as his main present; what's peoples thoughts on those style wise?

If I could find a Hublot for that money (apart from an old MDM????) I'd have one.

Agreed.

My parents asked me what I wanted. They gave me a budget, we trawlled round some shops, tried stuff on... pushed the budget a little hehe , the old man negotiated it down to his budget and we even got a day out in the Breitling tent at an airshow.

It's still my daily wearer over a decade later.

There was no room to have it engraved, so they had a plague made and attached to the box.

OP do shop around as there are discounts to be had. There is a certain independent jewellers near Liverpool Street Station in the City of London that will give you 20% discount on a TAG or Omega.

Obviously you may not be near London but do haggle with the price, good luck.

If it were me I'd buy an Omega Speedmaster for my son.

I 'work' (I use the term very loosely in summer) in the city so will definitely check this out, many thanks.

Many thanks for those who have opened my eyes to the Omega Speed/Seamaster range; this is definitely the route I am going to go down. Anybody have any experiences of the best (or worst) places to buy an Omega in either London/Cambridge/Norwich?

Have you considered something used, from his birth year?
