Discussion
Thanks for the responses. 1995 4.0 Engine is low mileage but to me feels as though it hasn't been used regularly or serviced 'properly' for a good while. Shunting has been a problem since I bought the car 12 months ago. Other than that, it ran very sweetly with loads of power until recently suddenly developed loss of power / not firing on all cyclinders. Engine hunting around quite a bit on tickover. Very lumpy up to about 3K then seems to smooth out a bit. Has been recently serviced, but the loss of power problem / not all cyclinders firing not solved. Plugs and HT leads replaced. Distributor looks OK. Stepper motor cleaned and OK. I've had all wishbones, brakes, alarm system, starter motor and battery replaced, and 12k service done in the past year so I'm not averse to throwing some money at the engine now! I'm very tempted to take it in to Peter Smith. I've developed a suspicion that a 'main dealer' may be the only reliable way of ensuring full capacity to test and repair the engine so it performs properly. I'm not made of money, but to me, the whole point of this car is the engine, and while that's compromised, the car is worse than useless. There must be someone out there who REALLY knows how to make the RV8 sing!

First thing is to do a compression test and to get it right buy your own tester from Halfords. You want a tester that screws into the spark plug hole. Crank for 5 times per cylinder and record the readings. It's actually quite an easy thing to do.
Don't forget to hold the throttle wide openBoosted LS1 said:

There's one tvr garage that can't use a compression tester, lol. Derek knows who.Hmmm 60 psi at there garage, then with no miles extra on the engine, 150 psi on a Gunson tester in my garage.
Whats with the Comp test revealing all!?
I would put some money on the cam being circular on a few lobes...
That will raise compression, both of my RV8 TVR's had exactly the same fault when i bought them.
The other TVR a snapped crank, i can see a pattern here

Just in case anyone is not clear what transpired, this chap sent me a derogatory email about Jamie & Mike's services with unsubstantiated innuendo last weekend, which PH refused to allow me to publish due to N&S rules

Bit out of order...again IMO....Just in case anyone is not clear what transpired, this chap sent me a derogatory email about Jamie & Mike's services with unsubstantiated innuendo last weekend, which PH refused to allow me to publish due to N&S rules
Sudden loss of power is unlikely to be camshaft problems without some other major symptom, such as noise.
Testing compression is a piece of cake. The devises are cheap enough and accurate enough. All you want to do is compare rather than worry about the max so precise readings are of little use.
The instructions on the box are clear enough.
I was told by a garage that I had low compression in #1 on an MGB 1800. I bought the compression tester and found I had low comression on #1 so for me it was a bit of a waste. Mine turned out to be a faulty ring - well, we've all been there - and it was easy enough to repair.
I used to check compression regularly, every other service, but it proved a waste. I kept records and found that as engines get older they lose compression slightly. I think I might have read that somewhere.
However, I've used it on a couple of friends' cars and have found low compression on one pot for them. It is useful. At worst it puts one possible cause in the bin.

Dave - You're being a prick, again.Just in case anyone is not clear what transpired, this chap sent me a derogatory email about Jamie & Mike's services with unsubstantiated innuendo last weekend, which PH refused to allow me to publish due to N&S rules
Mike's situation with his customer/s is his business and their business, not yours to broadcast. The reason I mentioned to you it was purely in context of recommendations that you had made. I can't comment and haven't commented on Mike's skills, no direct experience.
Jamie is held up, slightly, on my project - for reasons I now better understand. The exact words I used to you, privately, as the person who recommended him to me, now widely published, were "Mid-project wobble in confidence". That's not derogatory in the slightest and by definition allows that the problem (confidence) might lie with me not Jamie.
Mike - if you feel you want to discuss this and/or see the "derogatory" remarks I've made about you (er.. none) then get in touch. I imagine you're non best pleased that Spend has, for a second time, blown your anonymity as regards the problems. With friends like him, who needs enemies eh ?
Dave, I realise that for someone clearly as much in love with yourself as you, contradiction is hard to take - but that doesn't mean you're right. I checked out your profile website to see who I'm dealing with. I was amused to see there must've been about 300 pictures of you. And about 3 of your wife. She must be really flattered.
How does it go at yours ?
Dave - "You look gorgeous tonight"
Mrs. Dave - "Oh, that's sweet darling"
Dave - "I wasn't talking to you.."
Now do one, before I take the gloves off.
ETA - And by the way, Jamie tells me he's not done any work for you. Has Mike ? I only ask because if they haven't, how are you in a position to recommend them without any direct experience ? You're a stickler for getting your facts straight after all...
Know what ? I actually thought it was just the beer talking on Sunday and made allowances accordingly. Turns out I was wrong. You are just being a prick.
