Shed for house project

Some extra brains needed.

Moving house to a project house. Lots of tip runs, garden centre, ikea, etc. Have a saloon car now with not the best load access. Costed up buying a trailer and tow bar...

But then thought I might be able to buy a shed, run it for the 18 months of the project, then resell, or scrap worst case.

Must be: estate or people carrier
Budget:1500 ish
Mpg don't care.
Petrol or diesel.
Make: don't care
Speed: for once don't care. Will probably go in a 70 zone once a year.

Was thinking of ford galaxy / vw sharan / Volvo 740.... Not renault espace 2.2 as i hear it is flaky...

Thoughts?

A friend of mine got an L200 for the same job.

So I would say some sort of pick up.

sounds like the perfect excuse for an old landrover, loads of space inside and most will come fitted witha tow bar meaning you can use a trailer for bigger stuff.

My old man had one for work, basically with all the seats out it is a HUGGGE comfy van.

Dads is an old TDi, utterly bombroof and does 40mpg with ease.

They seem to hold their value too, so you'll easily be able to shift it!

Plus, a million mini-cabbers can't be wrong!

Volvo 850 - cavernous, tough, decent to drive, make a nice noise - a minter can be had for well under 2 grand a useable work horse can be had for well under 1 grand - 20valve models make the nicest noise - t5 if you want a good turn of speed

If it is for a tip run, an L200 might look like a commercial vehicle and incur unwanted interest, if not charges at a council run tip, so go for the MPV, as it looks like a family car.

You can't get an L200 for under 1500 these days anyway. At least not one that works.

A Nissan D21 Hardbody should do it; but they are comically rare.

I'd recommend a Transit. Loads of choice and plenty under budget. At the end, scrap it or sell it.

Kia Sedona. In the same way as the Galaxy mentioned, remove the 5 rear seats and you have a huge load area, another advantage is that you won't mind messing it up, in fact you may relish it!

Or for the estate option, I doubt you could get much bigger (or squarer, which can be a big help sometimes) than the Volvo 850.

Not to be advised - most 'tips' will take a dim view of a van being used for supposed domestic waste, even the ones that will allow it tend to employ a permit ticket system which rations how often you can visit.

I'd disagree. Having spent a few months working on a council tip we used to get hundreds of vans and pickups. The type of vehicle is irrelevant. The waste content is what matters. A few drops of what would be patently domestic waste should not cause issue.

Good advice all - thanks. I know our local tip ration private van use to certain days... I think the people carrier feels like the best balance, though I really fancy a L200 (and have no idea why).

Incredibly cheap and incredibly capable, you might even decide to keep it if you enjoy welding

Or you can take the seats out and actually use it as a shed

Check your local tip first. Some 4x4's are too large to get under the barrier some have installed.

Sheffield tips only allow vans, pickups and even trailers with a prearranged permit. Otherwise they simply turn you away.

Same problem here in Northumberland.... You need to send away for a permit which takes days.

No wonder they have such a big problem with fly tipping

I use a Dihatsu HiJet to do the tip run.

In the minibus form it'll carry 7 adults, whip out the seats (10 min job) and you've got a HUGE space to carry all manner of c*ap down the tip.

Under 1,000cc and cheap to ensure and tax (and economical). I got mine for disposable money (£900).

I wouldn't want to have a crash in it though - your knees are the crumple zone.
