Pain/cramp in fingers when training biceps
Discussion
Hello all, hoping you can help
I've noticed for the past few months I've been getting cramp in my fingers after releasing dumbbells/ez bar after working my biceps. This has been painful but bearable until last night where after two sets I had to stop due to the pain in my fingers
They still feel tight and aching this morning and I'm not sure what the hell is going on. My technique is fine and I'm lifting ok weights for my strenghth
Anyone had this before?
I'm 19, quite slim 6ft 1/12st and quite fit. Never had this feeling before and it's ruining my programme!!
any ideas??
Thanks in advance
Dan

ONLY when training biceps? If so, it may be down to your technique - bear in mind, the grip strength comes from the forearm as it pulls the fingers closed so are you perhaps over-tensing the forearm by either gripping too much (thus causing strain on the joints of the fingers) or bending the palm towards the inside of the wrist when you do a bicep curl which may again cause undue pressure on the fingers?
early onset arthritis? 19 is bloody young tho. have you injured your hands in the past?
also consider for bicep/arm training in the early stages it's always hand and forearm that fail first usually anyway.
try keeping more hydrated, less salt and some sort of gloves if you haven't already. take the weight right down and build condition in your hands and forearms and work back up gradually.

It this only when performing specific exercises or generally when holding a barbell with that grip?
If you're training for strength I'd stop expending energy on isolation movements like curls and focus on pull-ups, chin-ups, deadlifts and barbell/dumbbell rows. These will be of more benefit (and will certainly work your biceps) and may help your grip problems.

Is it really cramp? Do you lose conscious control over your fingers and they curl up by themselves or spasm?
Or is it a deep sharp shooting pain that feels like it's in your bones?
The reason I ask is the latter is most likely and the latter is an indication of over-training or in less extreme cases, repetitive strain (too much of the same old routine and a routine that isn't well balanced - common mistakes).
Change routine or give yourself a break - at least a week but with over-training this could even be up to 3 months, though you are not displaying symptoms of serious overtraining. (wait till the pain starts waking you up in the middle of the night)
