Potential new job with car allowance thats only paid if I'm using a car less than 3 years old. My C-MAX is a 55 plate, it's on 71k, value is 2/3rds of fk all so might be worth keeping/giving to the o/h and just using something else for business

I don't want to lease, been down that road before with HP and PCP's and still licking my wounds on one that I had to get out of quickly.

I don't really care about aesthetics or driving prowess for what it's going to do (mostly the M1), I'm happy with being in white goods territory if needs be.

I've been looking at 59 plate or 10 plate back markers, from such giants as Chevrolet, Dodge and to a lesser extent Kia. Maybe buying nearly new, keeping one for 3'ish years/100k and waiting for the wheels to fall off

Any thoughts? Are they all ex hire? And really as horrible as people make out, and I should just get a newer Focus and trade it after a year?

I prefer the OH's i30 with it monsterous 108hp 1.4 to the diesel Focii at work. The 110hp Focii are miserable. Steering is equally over-assisted and notchy on both the i30 and Focus, brakes are also both lacking feel and are WAY over-servoed.

The only difference is the i30 is much cheaper, and the ride is maybe a little more bumpy than the Focus, though I'm thinking it probably more to do with the horrible OE fit Hankook tyres on the i30 compared to the OE fit Goodyears on the Focus.

The petrol i30 gets very similar MPG to the diesel Focus, too (around 43mpg).

I meant to say, you can get a Mk4 Mondeo for similar money to a similar aged Focus - you get an awful lot more car for your money. The Mondeo is more likely to last more than 80k, too.

OP, bearing in mind that you will be spending a not inconsiderable amount of money & that your on a motoring web-site, am intrigued as to why you dont want something a little more stimulating than a "white-goods" type car to pound the motorways ? This is particularly so as looking at your garage, you clearly have a keen interest in cars. Not a criticism you undersatand, merely an observation.

Bearing in mind how much it costs to fuel, insure, service & generally run a car in this day & age, have you thought of something such as an Alfa Romeo 159 ? With your budget, you could easily get a 2008/2009 Lusso spec car with either a 1.9 or 2.4 JDTM engine. Having test driven one of these cars, they really are a poor mans Quattroporte in red with a tan leather interior.

For something a little more mainstream (& you may even retain some value at the end of your ownership), how about the ubiquitous 3 Series, A4 or C-class ?

Maybe a more feisty option. But I'd have thought £10k would get you a nearly new Mitsubishi Colt RalliArt. Not the last word in hot hatches, but with a 1.5 turbo and 7.x to 60mph they aren't too bad. You can remap them too and they weigh around 1000kg. Mpg should be ok. Mid 30's and even 40's if you drive sensible. Also won't be any worse on the m-way than any other small hatchback.

Shame the Colt's interior makes an 80's Renault look and feel well built. My Lancer was coming apart inside after less than 2 years, and it's WAY better built than the Colt.

It's an issue of budget really - I'm looking for 59 plate onwards, ideally 10/60's and it's purely to satisfy a bean counter while trudging up and down a motorway. I'd love a 159 (I've been there before on the 3 series and they're expensive to keep on the road) but again, looking at where I need to be on registration dates, vs the budget i have available, it no worky

The RalliArt idea was a cool one, but not fitting of arriving at a business meeting hehe

On Autotrader, you can specify between £7k and £10k, manual, diesel, under 2 years old, and see where that gets you.

Then you can play with the above, and the engine size to get something with some fun as well.

Didn't know these had come down this low already...

If I go 11 plate, a Chevrolet Epica and a Kia Carens rofl

I'm into Dodge Caliber's if I go more than a year old (though IIRC the diesel has the Passat engine in it). That said, with a car allowance it'll be paid off within 2 years so technically if I run it for 3 and get nothing for it thats OK'ish

Me neither, hopefully everything's still working on it! I quite like the look of them

Really? confused

Not saying it's the answer, but I don't really see how it radically differs from the cars you mention in your OP. Not visually anyway.

They seem a little too small for motorway work, think I'm probably looking for the next class up in size. But cheers for the suggestion though!
