Hi guys, just thought I would fill you in with my painful weekend so you can laugh at me smile

Friday, I stripped out the old IC and fitted the Pro Ally one that I managed to source 2nd hand. This was an easy job although a bit of a mare getting my pipe work to fit to it as it didn't come with any.

Sunday, I was returning from Golf when all of a sudden I felt a jolt and power had reduced. Knowing the car was now running on a couple of fewer cylinders I was planning to crawl to the GF's when by the next roundabout it died.

Pulled over to investigate and noticed the fuel pump wasn't priming and was getting no spark? This was all around 6pm.

Called the AA who (for the first time ever) found the fault.

The large P clip that secures the wires along the back of the car in front of the IC was undone when we took the IC box out. When we put it back together one of the wires had dropped out of the P Clip and fell onto the manifold and yes you guessed it, Melted.

This first took out two of the six coils (4 and 3) and then after a few hundred yards blew a fuse. (I checked all fuses but forgot about the ones by my ECU banghead).

The AA man fixed the wire replaced the fuse and we were running again but only on 4 cylinders.

I stupidly got the AA to agree that I could pop home and get my spare one, come back and if it didn't work I could crawl to the GF's and they low load me back.

A friend picked me up and took me home to find I had binned the spare one as it was faulty. Doh. So went back and drove to GF's. Called them back and the best they could do was 11:40pm, which I agreed. Got a call later telling me this time had moved to 1am and then again to 2am and finally I was picked up at 3am.

Was home and in bed for 4 am with a plan to call round all motor factors first thing to find a coil pack. (This did include calling James and Simon trying to borrow theirs just for my track day smile). Managed to find one but not trusting they would get it to them in time I drove to there main depot and picked it up my self.

Fitted it and wahay it started and was running fine. It was now 10am and had to get to Brands. This we did and got there for the lunch brake. Missed first 3 sessions but still had two I could get out in.

First session was great and temps all good, upped the boost a bit for a lap or two and then (as my head is currently lifting if I use to much boost) the coolant temp shot up. Pulled in and then had the task to top up coolant and bleed out the air. Got this done in time for the next session.

Again had a blast and was getting a bit cocky and having trouble getting the car to slow enough into some of the corners, which then resulted in a spin on the turn in to Clearways. It was a good 540deg spin and its all on film so will put it up once I've edited it.

Car temp shot up as the car came to a halt very quickly, so drove back in and went through the topping up bleeding again ready for the drive home.

My mate in his Elise said he didn't want to drive back on the M25 and wanted to go the back roads home. I said ok and followed him. What a mistake that was as we pretty much went through the out skirts of London in rush hour. The aircon had decided not to work and it was a hot day and was not very nice.

On the plus side we ended up back on the A3 by my parents so as it was my mums B day we popped in to say hi (and sort the aircon out).

Despite all this, I had a great time and was pleased the car ran so well despite knowing I would need coolant at some point.

It was good to meet you Dave and will see you again on another one smile

Also the Hindhead Tunnel was good fun.

Videos to follow and sorry this was so long. lol

Well done bondy. I did wanna go to brands. But I was already booked to go on Bedford. And I fill your pain as my front turbo return pipe went. And I found a hydraulic pipe shop and changed it while I was there. And then back on track. To then get blacked flagged for noise frown. Glad all is well tho mate

Looking forward to seeing the vid biggrin

Just one thing, I'm a bit confuses why you needed to keep topping up the coolant? Surely you'd fill it to max the first time?
If you bled the system and don't have a leak where did it all go?

As my head is lifting it pressurizes into the coolant system and pushes it all out the header tank and eventually so much coolant comes out I get an air lock in the thermostat pipe and then the gauge goes up and stat doesn't open to circulate the water.

crikey the head is lifting !

next time you get it apart you can fit some threaded bar and then bolt the head down with nuts than rather use stretch bolts

something that used to work well on the old cosworths was a coopers ring - a copper ring sat between the head and head gasket and held it all in place

Wow, I wouldnt be driving that, get the arp head bolt kit and get those bad boys fixed down before you damage the block/pistons with water.

It already has the ARP studd kit. Prob was that they torqued it up to the lowest of the 3 ARP options for that bolt (74 Nm). ARP got back to me with 84 Nm and Noble Motorsport say 88. Another engine builder for a 2.5 took them to 90Nm. It goes in for this in September.

Don't think it's an issue as I'm running low boost 0.7 and this doesn't cause an issue.

Surely if the air in the chamber can get out past the gasket there is the potential for water to get into the cylinder though? It's frustrating when different people have different info, my engine was just built up in Aberdeen but now Jetstream have it they found the head bolts not tight enough and cam bolts not tight enough, the guy in aberdeen said he followed the instructions but there were other problems so Jetstream are doing it again for me just in case and I got most of my money back from the first place I tried. Thankfully it's in safe hands now.

Yeah maybe but during boost etc there is a lot of heat which will burn it. Not sure as I don't understand but will be sorted soon and then back to 1 bar and 400bhp smile

Good to finally meet you yesterday Mr Bond - hope you get your head screwed on without further issue mate. Very brave man tracking it. I never actually saw you on track as we were pretty much on opposite sides the whole time; any pics of your "expedition" available yet?

I had an excellent day with a couple of very good sessions and don't think I held anyone up wink ...still hearing the sound of the Lambo at WOT; that was something...

See you at the next one!
