Reading the thread about cars that look awful in certain colours earlier, I was surprised how many people disliked grey, silver, black and white. Surely these colours are so popular because people do like them and want to buy them. Having previously worked in the motor trade for 5 years, selling both new and used cars, I was aware that silver and black were good for resale but didn't realise that grey had become the new resale colour. As a seller, I would always recommend metallic colours for resale. If you go for metallic, someone's bound to like it. Red is fine on small cars but not so much on large cars (apart from Ferraris). White was a major no-no at the time but has now become more popular on small, sportier cars. Yellow is a bit of a marmite colour but if you love it, you love it.

Perhaps the other reason for grey, silver and black being popular is that most cars look alright in these colours and if you don't know much about cars these are a safe option. I have owned a black car (looks great when clean but difficult to keep clean, scratches too easily and feels like a furnace in the summer) and I have yet to own a grey car but would be quite likely to in future. In fact, thinking about the cars that would be in my dream garage, many of them would be in grey or black (not so much silver) though. Things like Astons, Bentleys, Maseratis, Mercedes look better in more discreet colours such as this. There are also many different shades of silver (some of the bluey or greeny silvers are quite nice). So am I alone in thinking that many cars look best in these colours? I will point out at this stage that I own a bright blue Impreza and a red Fiat 500, so don't think that all cars should be black, grey, silver or white. Here are some cars that I think look good in these colours.

Resale grey

Alfa Romeo 159
Most Aston Martins
Audi RS4/RS6 (Daytona grey by far the best colour)
BMW 3-Series
Fiat Panda 100HP
Discovery 3/4
RR Sport
Elise
Evo
GTR
Peugeot RCZ
911 (one of the evo writers has a grey GT3 which looks awesome)
MG ZR/ZS/ZT (by far the best colour on the ZT - looks awful in yellow, red or bright blue)
Impreza RB5
M3 CSL
New Impreza STIs
Mondeo
Mercedes
Maseratis

Black

Most Alfas
Astons
BMWs
Mercedes
Fiat Panda 100HP
Mondeo
RR Sport
350Z
old Octavia/Fabia vRS
Golf GTi
Honda Integra/Civic Type-R
Suzuki Swift Sport
911
Maseratis

Silver

Most Alfas
Astons
3-Series
Audi A5
Audi TT mk1
most Mercedes but mk1 SLK and 1960s 350SE Convertible in particular)
Honda Civic Type-R (the first one)
Elise
Discovery 3/4
Porsches
Maseratis
Volvos
Suzuki Swift Sport
mk1 Golf GTi
mk4 Golf

White

Audi A5
BMW 1-series/3-Series
Fiat 500
Polo/Golf GTI
Maserati Granturismo
Volvo C30

So am I alone in thinking that some cars look great in grey, silver, black and white? Over to you.

They came in black too.

Although I think 'silver grey' really suits the shape. (Hence why I got a standard M3 in the same colour)

Yes some cars look great in Silver, Grey, Black and White but listing them is pointless as it is entirely subjective.

And to say people pick these colour because they don't know anything about cars, what utter bks.

Colour is completely subjective as is attractivemess, coolness and how quick the day's gone.

BTW Chav cars are not subjective they are entirely objective, the only person who thinks they are cool is the knobber driving it and they ARE WRONG!

Regardless of the current vogue for the shade, I find white a 'difficult' colour on large cars. Tha Audi A5 looks terrible in white, as it seems to bulk the car up, drawing attention to lines over the wheelarches that neither swoop neatly nor plunge sensuously, but just kind of 'meander' like a fat bloke's wife-beater. Overall, white A5s look like beached whales.

Can't help but think that among all this obssession with white on modern cars, manufacturers have overlooked the best shade for big cars. A kind of off-white ivory/cream shade can look great, especially if the car has very flowing, traditional lines, and looks great when sunlight plays over it, but this harsh pearlescent white is too much of an assault on the eyes as far as a lot of cars are concerned. It's fine if the car is a bold, radical design statement like any given Lamborghini or the forthcoming Lotus range, but if it's a large saloon it just looks like a slab of cheap vanilla ice-cream from some cash-and-carry.
