Right, bit of a 'pub' question but here goes.

I have recently done my first airfield day in my (also)recently acquired Z4 2.5si. Needless to say I have the bug and am keen to get out again soon. The car ran well and covered just over 50 miles at Hullavington on standard tyres and pads. I have been looking at the pads and the front look like they have about 6mm left and the rears around 10mm. I am guessing that these are the same pads from new as the car has only done 9k. It didn't occur to me to check what was on the front before the day, partly as it had just come from the dealer for an oil change / brake fluid change who said the pads were all fine.

The question is will 6mm likely be enough for another session, assuming similar driving style and distance?

A new pad only has about 12mm so I recon yours could probably do that trackday several times over!
Don't forget to think about your fluid too. If it's old, a flush and bleed with new fluid will make a world of difference.

EDIT: Aah, you have brake fluid covered

The thinner the pad the more heat that is transferred and therefore the greater the risk of boiling the fluid. Personally I wouldn't start a track day on half worn pads. I tried it once when I first started tracking and didn't know better. The pedal went straight to the floor when I needed it most. It was not a nice feeling!

6mm and more should be fine if the pads and fluid are good. I have not experienced any problems even when my pads were around 2mm (not that you should go that low).

6mm is loads, I've started a day with 2mm before (I put the standards back in at lunch for safety). I got 7 trackdays and 10,000 road miles out of my DS2500's.

My old trackcar was roughly a set of pads and tyres every 3-4 full dry trackdays. I use to swop them early, the pad would start to break up a bit towards the end of life (EBC reds)
