Colleague is looking at a 2009 Mercedes C Class estate, up at £23990.
Realistically how much do you reckon he can get it for, Mercedes dealer, cash buyer.

As a cash buyer he'll get it for £23,990, as a finance buyer he'll get it for £22,000 (not including his interest costs) but can pay it off early if he's clever and save some money.

Spec? Mileage? What kind of dealer?

If it's a C180 manual with 80k ... he'll get loads off unless it's a place that specifically wants to abuse its customers.

As I suspect it's a very nice spec, with low mileage at that money, probably not that much ...

Is his heart set on a Merc? Cause he could get a better BMW for less money.

Seriously? You reckon there's zero to be had off a £20K+ used car in the current climate?

A salesman's dream!

A dealer let me walk on a used car of exactly that price the other week, 0 discount. And had the cheek to offer 1k under book price on my PX.

That was at a VW dealership.

It all depends how they have priced the car too, how long they have held it as stock and such. Impossible for us to really say, but on most cars of this value you'd have to be aiming for well over a grands discount as a starting point. Going for more or less than that would be dependent on about a million factors.

I thought the general consensus on PH was that it is rude to haggle. So just tell your mate to pay full whack and make sure he doesn't ask any questions when he rings up apart from availability and viewing time.

I was once told a definition of a perfect deal, from a much wealthier, and experienced businessman than me was "When neither party are happy"

Haggle the price then haggle about finance.... Don't even mention finance until you have nailed a price.

and nearly all those fees that they charge in the finance can be reduced. Wife just had £300 of fees cut to a tenner and the rate dropped from 10.4% to 6.1% APR.

Both now at stalemate. So I think the deal has gone as far as it can.

No, it's rude not to!
