Anyone remember this from a few years ago?
Some company wanted to revive the Triumph motors badge and put out this rather nice render. OK the artist clearly slipped when drawing the rear haunches but it's otherwise a nicely resolved shape. I tried to do a search for this project but couldn't find anything on PH or Google - anyone remember what happened/is happening with this project?

The Triumph motorcycle company own all the rights to the Triumph name IIRC, so I doubt they'd let some fly by night operation put the name on some crappy Aston Martin knock off. There's just too much riding on the name.
Actually, Rover owned all the rights to produce Triumph cars, and this then fell to the hands of BMW. Because BMW motorcycles are a major competitor with Triumph motorcycles, the Triumph name for cars was all set to remain buried. Triumph motorcycles are not allowed to produce Triumph-branded cars. The Triumph name probably now lives in Shanghai along with Rover and MG.

That was the last I heard. I assumed it had gone to Shanghai, but perhaps not. If Triumph is still with BMW, there will be no Triumph cars any time soon.kambites said:
Well if BMW do still own it, they presumably believe there is some chance of them using it. I don't think they would have bothered to keep it otherwise? I'd always assumed they'd kept it in case they wanted a brand to use on a range of lower budget cars, at some point.
Highly unlikely in my opinion. The BMW and Triumph bikes are the problem... it would be a marketing and branding horror-story. Perhaps they are holding onto the name because they believe it has value for John Bloor, and either they are doing it as a speculative move should he ever want to produce cars (they sell it to him) or they are holding onto it as a preventative measure, to stop him from ever doing so.
Why would it be a marketing problem? I wasn't suggesting that BMW used the Triumph brand on bikes and the Triumph motorcycle company have no right to use the brand on cars. Surely it wouldn't be the first time that a company had split into two arms, both of them continuing to use the same name in disjoint markets?

No, I realise you weren't suggesting that. What I am saying is that you won't ever find BMW pushing the Triumph name. They can't say anything positive about the Triumph name, because even if they were trying to promote a BMW-made Triumph car, it would have a brand association with the bikes... their number one competitor in selling motorcycles.
