E46 330i - Losing Power

Hi guys
I'm having a little trouble with my 330i. This morning when driving to work it seemed to be intermittently losing power when on steady throttle i.e. not accelerating or decelerating.
It's an automatic and the sensation is like a gear change but with an extended loss of power, maybe 1 or 2 seconds. The power always comes back but in the 10 minute drive this morning it happened maybe 5 times which was worrying. It is also immediately resolved by applying more throttle.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
