Why did you buy the car you currently own?

Simple question.
For me it was simply I wanted something fun but iconic. This obviously led me down the classic Mini path. It was either going to be that or keep the Punto I had for a few years and get a twin turbo Supra which I've been very fond of all my life. 2 Completely different cars but I went for the Mini which has been 100x more fun and just brilliant than I expected.

I was in a rush to get a towcar to get my race car up to my first ever race at Pembrey two or three weeks after (March 2010). It had to be diesel and over 1350kg to legally tow without an additional license. Budget was only £2k.
Couldn't find a passat or octavia which fitted, then a Mondeo saloon came up for sale 3 miles down the road... nice spec and with a haggle in budget. The ad pics had been taken in such a way to hide the middle of the rear bumper, So I suspected it would have a tow bar!
I wasn't specifically looking for mondeo and it wasn't my fist choice, but time was tight and looking at the spec, leather, power etc I was pleasantly surprised. The three owners turned out to be the seller's employer, then the seller himself, then his wife.
Went for it and touch wood it's been great. Not having to fit a tow bar saved a lot of time and money!

Lost my company car with my last job and needed a car. It was Christmas, I only had a spare bag of sand so decided to buy something fun for the money to keep until summer. Having owned 3 x E36's I was drawn towards something BMW flavoured, but all I could find was another E36 or an old E39.
Instead I looked at alternatives including the MR2, FTO, Pug 205 GTi's, Fiat Coupes, etc. I decided on an MR2 having always wanted one when I was younger. However having looked at 6 in total I was beginning to give up on the idea due to the fact they were all nails. I was almost falling into the 'I'm just going to buy a Vectra' when I came upon the one I have now. Had FSH, was in fantastic condition for an 18 year old car and the seller seemed genuine. Knocked £50 off the asking price and drove it home.... in the snow.
8 months on and I haven't swapped it nor do I want to.

Beemer - because I do tons of miles and it's a comfy place to be on the motorway and still just about passable when chucking around some bends, and I can't cope without RWD.
Pajero - I wanted something cheap for transporting crap and that I could work on stripping down and rebuilding an engine as I've never really got round to doing much more than oil/fluids and brake/suspension servicing before.
Both serving their purpose nicely. Would never have done a timing belt and water pump on any of the cars I've had before but not being too worried if I bodged the Paj up meant it was pretty stress free (apart from slipping the valve pulley off TDC by accident and having to reset it).

98' Honda Prelude 2.2vti... Limited by insurance, being 20 at the time and living in a fairly bad postcode I had to think up a left-field car that's fun to drive but won't cost the earth to insure and the Lude was it, haven't looked back since. Great car for the money I paid, a real bargain.
TVR - Love it and had it for years, thought about selling it a couple of times but just couldn't
Polo diesel - Had it for 8 years now and it simply gets you from A-B economically, with no fuss or complaints in reasonable comfort, you don't even have to think about it and it's got air-con.
XJS - Well just look at the thing and you need to ask why?

Had an MX5 and loved the fun open top sportster feel, but it was just too cramped and noisy to do any serious distances in.
New car gives me similar performance, better handling (MX5 was a pre facelift MK3 on standard suspension), more room, better economy on a run (surprisingly), and crucially is saloon car quiet with the roof up on long hauls and very comfortable.
Perfect.
