Race At Brooklands For Charity

Motorsport returns to Brooklands (albeit in charity kart race form...)

If you asked us what we reckoned the least likely thing to happen in British motorsport was, we would probably say 'the return of racing to Brooklands'.

But that's exactly what's happening this September. Well, sort of. The Legendary Brooklands banking is crumbling these days, and there are offices and homes where there used to be track, so it's not quite back to its full glory.

But Mercedes-Benz World now fills part of the site, and it has a small 'handling' circuit designed for demonstration runs of its faster products. It also happens to be the perfect size for kart racing.

Which is convenient, because Mercedes-Benz World has teamed up with arrive-and-drive karting specialists Daytona and the Henry Surtees Foundation for a two-hour charity challenge race on the afternoon of 12th September.

Up to 35 teams can take part in the race, which will be followed by a Gala dinner and charity auction. Teams of up to five drivers will be racing around the M-B World circuit in Daytona's DMAX two-stroke karts, whose 125cc Rotax engines can push you along at up to 75mph.

A race ream and dinner for 10 costs £3000 plus VAT or, if you don't have any friends, a single driver entry can be had for just £900 including VAT (and yes, we know that's a lot of money, but it is for a good cause).

Proceeds will go to the Henry Surtees Foundation's charity, Headway Surrey.

If you want to find out more, or to book a team, you can call Daytona on 0845 644 5504, or you can e-mail hsc@daytona.co.uk.

getting 9 other mates to all come up with £360 for a couple of hours driving followed by a bit of grub in the evening seems a bit excessive to me, but oh well, it's for charity...

If it's for charity, could you not get that expensed tax-free as a charitable donation?

No quite. They said "a race team and dinner for 10 costs £3000". A race team is "up to five drivers" the other five don't ever get to race, they just get the dinner. You can see why they have done it, the guys get to race and the partners get posh dinner out of it

Go-Karts at Brooklands! WHAT NEXT?

Formula Ones to become electric.
Everyday car to become (also) electric, and dangerous
because you DO NOT HEAR THEM ARRIVE,
and of course they DO POLLUTE,
as electricity is not found underground: you have to produce it.

All nonsense the world we are living in now.

When will the NAPIER RAILTON at last be electric or turbine powered?

Thanks Tiny Cappo.

I am a trustee of the Henry Surtees Foundation, and hope you can make a team. John and family are really trying to give hope in their loss by helping make things better for others who can be helped, so please look past the detail of karts at Brooklands or whether it's worth it. It is worth it.

I think it's a great idea for a great cause.

I'd love to be able to enter a family team, but my two youngest sons aren't quite ready for the 125cc karts just yet. Maybe another 6 or 8 years. I know my 10 year old would very much love to do this for the Surtees foundation. He wants to be a professional driver when he's older and karting is his starting point.

Hope this event goes well for you.
