Although I like its practicality and economy I am fed up with having to deal with the likelihood that my current 1.9 CDti 150PS Signum Design will be costing me 4 figures to reapir very shortly (Inlet manifold - known problem)

Ideally I would like to replace it with a 2 seater estate convertible with 40+mpg capability and a little bit of power when I need it. However I'm not sure sucha vehicle exists.

I currently commute around 15K miles a year and do maybe another 3k in personal mileage (I have 2 other toys which give me the fun factor to use on the additional 3-5K a year I do)

So what I need is a car which has reasonable economy, a fair amount of space in the rear suitable to transport an ageing German Shepherd and ideally a little bit of fun over the B roads on which I commute.

Budget circa £8K

I know that the Skoda VRS will get thrown in the mix and have even considered a Jazz (had one before and it was very capable if a little underpowered (1.4))

Really I am just looking for ideas. The more left field the better.

That's two of us then, need a huge boot for 2 greys and only 2 seats. Did think about a van, but lack of visibility puts me off as does not being able to open rear windows for the dogs.

And something small ish maybe?

I thought about a van and a pickup with a load cover but not entirely sure I can find a convertible one.

I do have a design for one (2 seat convertible estate/van) in my head and I reckon a manufacturer would sell loads of them.

Well 2, maybe we could Justin and make it 3!
Show your artistic side.

Pick up no good for an old Alli or Grey, too high. Needs a fold down bumper like the old Fiat Marea Weekend.

Depends! What about an old Mini or Polo pick up? biggrin

Ian, I don't think that Jeep would pass on the economy stakes being a 4.0 litre

...but I've cheated, as the rear seats are just folded down. You could get rid of them, to make it a true 2 seater. wink

And it's not for sale. But if that's what you want, buy an estate and just do it. smile

The inlet manifold isn't a 4 figure repair.

If you can hold a spanner, and have a day to spare, you can replace it yourself, and parts are about £300 now.

I've done it myself, and I'm no mechanic.

Did you do the timing belt and the water pump while you were there?

Did you block off the EGR to avoid the problem recurring?

Did you have the EGR valve tech2'd out to stop the EML from staying on?
