So I've just got a new car and luckily just in time as the clutch has just gone on my old one

I've just had to tax it as its on the road, but its just sat there

About 2 weeks ago the car started making a noise like the fan belt was slipping which got worse when the clutch pedal was depressed, thats now changed to a situation where depressing the clutch, does nothing

So I have assumed the clutch has perished, it managed 148k so can't complain, but I spoke to my garage today and to pick up the car and fit a new clutch will be £525, so add that to the 118 I have just paid to tax it and we are looking at £700 ish

I don't think its worth much more than that at all, but its too good to scrap, as far as I can tell it has no rust which is very rare on an E30 and the engine is a peach

So what are my options, fix it and sell it, try and sell as is, or Ebay or scrappy?

Any advice?

Car is a 1991 E30 325i SE

They will be ringing your phone off the hook for your car , if you decide to sell it.
£500 for a clutch sounds quite expensive too

Sorry to hijack the topic but I'm in much the same situation. MG ZT 1.8t, suspect headgasket blown, possibly oil pump failure, at the very least. Probably about £700 to fix and only seem to be worth £1500 now, at best. We buy any car have offered about £800 as-is. I'm tempted to just offload it as quickly as possible rather than muck about spending out getting it fixed and potentially incurring more costs...

As is or fixed? It seemed expensive to me too but I trust the garage, I spoke to them again, they said its because the clutch itself is £390 as they only use LU Clutches? They said I can buy an Ebay special and they will fit it, but they will make this very clear on the paperwork as they don't want the comeback on their reputation

I would have a moral issue with this too

I don't have the room and I think it would be a shame, I love my new car, but the BM has proper soul, such a simple yet effective machine, plus my mate owned it for 10 years before me and I don't think he'd ever forgive me

I shall speak to other garages, would it be worth me heading to a scrappy for a clutch and getting an OEM one? Albeit of unknown age/life left

I would love to see this happen, alas I have neither the time/money or space for it to happen and no use for the car once done, I am trying to obtain my full PH wings but one car per person in the household is the max I can manage at the moment

I'd either ebay it as it is, or get an ebay clutch, fix it, and sell it.

As echoed before, seems such a waste to scrap it. If you don't want to see it perish then maybe out it up for quick/cheap sale one a BMW enthusiast forum and let someone else enjoy it for a couple of hundred?

Sachs clutch kit is £150 from eurocarparts - not exactly a dodgy no-brand make. Get it fixed!

Get your hands dirty. Fit a new clutch youself and instead of getting arseraped for £80 an hour get some friends, beer and pizza. Job done. wink
