Rob Hummal @ Cine Gear 2011 - Film vs. Digital

An interesting video I found via Fstoppers of a presentation given by Kodak's Rob Hummel at the Cine Gear Expo has got me wondering... But not about film vs. digital - but about whether flying with my digital camera will eventually kill it. (and also his 'chromatic abberation' piece... ..and overflowing photo sites...)

I'm sceptical, I've flown a fair few times over the past few years with a digital camera in tow, and none of them seem to have suffered for it.. Has anyone had any problems like this? Or is it merely Kodak attempting to boost it's film sales before the inevitable death?

Theoretically true...but I suspect the risk is a fair bit lower than he is suggesting.

As an example, I've been on at least 8 long-haul holidays and a couple of short-haul over the last 6 years. Both cameras still seem to be working fine, not noticed any drop-off in performance.

IF you were a pro 'tog travelling permanently, then it MAY be an issue...but then you'll probably be upgrading bodies fairly frequently too.

NASA use Nikon cameras in orbit, I'd be interested to hear their experiences

Mobile phone sensors should also be affected. I've done loads of long haul (14 hour+) legs with no harm to either camera or phone.

Mines has spent the last six months on about 16, 24 hours + flights. Including lots of other short haul (to me anyway - 8 hours flights).

Not a problem and certainly no lines through any of my images.
