It seems my Yamaha RX-V1500 AV receiver has developed a fault of some kind frown The unit is approximately 6 years old and has never missed a beat, but in the past couple of days it has continually failed to power on correctly. If I switch the receiver on, it will switch itself off after 2 seconds - I'm guessing it is trying to protect itself from something?

I have unplugged all the speaker cables, subwoofer and interconnects to eliminate the possibility of a short in the wiring. I have also replaced the kettle lead and tried a different power socket, but to no avail.

However I have noticed that if I leave the receiver switched off and unplugged for around 24 hours, it will switch on and stay on, long enough for a couple of DVDs. Monday night I watched two DVDs and switched it off before going to bed. Tuesday night, the unit kept switching itself off after 2 seconds of up-time frown

Does anyone know what could be causing the AV receiver to switch itself off? How come it stays on for hours and hours, provided I unplug it for several hours (1-2hrs is not enough)? Is it worth repairing, or would it be better to spend the money on a new unit? If repair; Anywhere good in Bucks/Berks? If replace; Any suggestions on what to get next? smile

In passing, I noticed these:

Denon AVR1912: http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/d...
Yamaha RXV667: http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/y...

I'm guessing the RXV667 would be similar, if not better than what I had?

Sounds like Dry joints to me, they cause things to do all manor of weird things. An average repair should cost around £50-£100 labor Plus of course any parts required.

Just checking, but the power off button on the remote isn't stuck in is it? wink

Might be worth opening it up and giving it a spray of Deoxit D5 Contact Cleaner as a last resort.

It's not, no frown I removed the batteries in case there was a problem with the remote. I left the receiver off for 24hrs, powered it back on and have left it on for 3 days with no issues! It's only if I turn it off and then turn it back on that it will switch itself off ...

If anyone has a Yamaha receiver, does yours click 2-3 seconds after powering on? Mine always has; It's at this moment it powers off frown

It's a pain in the nads! I'll be dropping off a Panasonic home cinema DVD thingy to Stuarts in Hayes tomorrow. £35 incl VAT for an initial look/repair.

My thoughts exactly ... I've unplugged all the cables from the back to ensure there are no shorts in the system or issues with the speakers and tried a new power cable, as a last ditch effort! I have no idea what it's trying to protect itself from! hehe

Yeah I've had one and it did the same.

I think it's the amplifiers being switched on with a relay you are hearing as my Denon does it too!

It is ... But it is at this point it switches itself off ... Actually, perhaps it could be a relay issue? idea

Could be the relay, it could be one of the amps. Basically I think you've narrowed down the components it could be with knowing just when it goes, it's probably a dry joint on one of the supply cables to the amps or relay.
