I pay the insurance on my summer car in September and the when it goes on the road in April get a refund for the off road period: simple.

This year Aviva returned the refund (£140) to my debit card which is on an account which I have since closed as Santader are prize idiots.

Thereby starts a sorry tale of phone calls to people in India and Liverpool who could not give a flying ****, the reopening of an account to receive monies they say they don't have upon which Santander then levy a £5 a month 'underfunding' charge throwing me £5 overdrawn as there was nowt in that account.

Weekly extended 0845 calls (35 mins this morning and 15 this afternoon) since early June.

I am at a loss as to what to do short of the banking ombudsman.

Any ideas?

Its Aviva's fault, they shouldn't have made the payment without checking the account exists. Chase them, its not Santanders issue.

Aviva are now promising to refund, but they have promised that before. Every call to their call centre is like Groundhog day. Santander are slightly better but still bleedin' useless.

Santander are by far the biggest fkwhits on the planet. But I suspect that the competition is very tight amongst most financial instituions.

Yes I puled most of acconts in January, whicvh si how the current chaos strated. I wouldn't have minded 9and suggested) Aviava just kept the £140 until this years insurance bill but that seems beyond them.

Just in the process of closing my Santander account and i've been clobered by the underfunding fee too. I gave up arguing with them in the end as they are just the most unhelpful bunch i've come across (they charged the first amount without any notification at all, not even online).

Thankfully first direct are proving as good as i'd heard they were
