Northern Europe WW2 Sites and Roads
Discussion
Morning all,
My brother and I are planning a trip later this month over the bank holiday (Thu afternoon to Mon night). We would like to visit some of the key World War 2 sites and cemetery's as we pass through and also get in some great driving.
As it will most likely be via the Eurotunnel I was thinking it would be sensible to head across North East France, Belgium, Holland and down into Germany taking in the Black Forest - does this sound doable?
I would think that going via Calais Normandy would be out?
Does anyone have any particular recommendations around specific sites to visit (Ardennes, Arnhem etc?) and the best roads on the way?
Cheers.

Hi,
I've done a lot of travelling around France,Belguim,Holland visiting/digging on WW1 and WW2 sites.Firstly i would say you are trying to cover quite a big distance its do-able in the time you have but you will only scratch the surface of what's out there.
I've listed major places of interest around your route let me know if you need more info.
V2 rocket sites Wizernes bunker and Watten Bunker at LA Coupole and Eperlecques both within an hour or so of Calais heading inland. They are both a must see !
Right next to Calais is the Todt Battery museum basically massive German gun battery in block house now turned into a brilliant museum. You can even buy an MG42 if you like !
Not much WW2 stuff to see in Belguim although Bastogne area good for battle of the Bulge stuff.Go to Foy nearby still has American fox holes in the woods re:band of brothers episode in the Ardennes forest.Visit Leopoldsburg in Belguim on route to Holland large allied WW1/2 cemetery there.
Arnhem area full of stuff stay in Nijmegen nice town and perfect position to visit bridge too far,Para landings etc and Lommel German cemetery 45,000+ buried there.
Hope that helps try and buy copies of Major and Mrs.Holts battlefield guide for Arnhem this will help you a lot.
cheers,
Richard.
