How do I get my pops and bangs back?
Discussion
Hi All
I've recently replaced the HT leads, plug shrouds, dizzy cap, rotor arm, ignition coil and amp. I also installed a smooth bore elbow and thermal trumpet base gasket as well as replac the rocker cover gaskets. In the process I also removed the throttle potentiometer to take the plenum cover off too.
Now it all seems to run really nicely...but I used to get loads of pops and bangs when I lifted off the throttle completely, these have now gone. I can induce with a very light touch on the throttle. Can I tighten up the throttle cable so it is ever so slighly openening the butterfly/moving the potentiometer? Any other methods?

WTF
sorry James I can't be any help but I just wondered how this would read to your average Joe
so what your saying is you possibly had a fault you have since cured that caused Pops & Bangs but you want them back
..
and you then go on to say you want to cause further problems by keeping the throttle off it's stop

I guess in removing & replacing the throttle pot you may have changed the alignment from what it used to be. Therefore fueling may be very slightly different now, enough to cause the loss of your pops & bangs perhaps? You could try loosening the screws sightly and see if a bit of 'travel' of the throttle pot brings em back...
Good luck

I did think that whilst I was typing. I'm aware that it was probably an induced fault by a previous owner, a nice fault though
It stopped popping just prior to replacing all the stuff in actual fact, wondered if the throttle cable had stretched slightly?debaron said:

There is no freeplay in the throttle pot unless someone has elongated the holes Good luck

did you knock the dizzy by chance when removing the plenum James?Simon says said:

Thanks. I don't think so, I did replace the rotor arm and dizzy cap though too. The dizzy seems firmly in place. As stated above (sorry should have mentioned this in the OP) it did actually stop popping prior to me replacing the ignition components. If I rev it in neutral it will pop a bit on the way back down to idle, but when on the move it is nothing like it used to be and wont pop unless you give it a slight amount of throttle.
did you knock the dizzy by chance when removing the plenum? The throttle pot position does have an effect, you seem to need to get the mixture really lean as the throttle shuts off, so the mixture wont ignite properly in the combustion chamber, but pops once it hits a hot exhaust manifold / catalyst. You could try getting the TP voltage as low as you can, but the 14CUX is supposed to self calibrate so it may not have any effect.
