Where have all the MK1 Mondeos gone? There used to be millions on the road (I had a couple of 1.8s)but I haven't seen one for ages,there aren't any in the classified either.They cant of all been scrapped?

Out of all the cars you never see anymore, for some reason these are the ones that I find the hardest to stomach! I'm only 18 so when I was growing up they were literally EVERYWHERE, especially being in Dagenham. But they all seemed to disappear really rather suddenly See far more Sierras than them now!

Usual. Depreciate quickly to back street banger, mistreated, minicabbed, gaffer-taped together until they fail the MOT on consumables and scrapped. A pikie motorsport favourite as well.

They weren't bad cars to be fair.

Old ones are shockingly awful to drive (they were when new as well).

Not worth spending money on them to get fixed (read through an MOT)

Most of them are rotten to hell. The last one I saw for an MOT would have put certain Alfas to shame.

most mk1 mndeos will have ended their lives at arena essex, apparently they are quite hard to bend on the nose and go well round the oval.....

They were a good drive when new so I have to disagree with you. Just read any period review to back my statement up. As for being sheds I wouldn't know so will take your knowledge as read.

Would a lot of them have been sent in for that scrappage scheme a few years ago? The sort of people who drove them would likely be wanting a new car by the time that scheme came into effect.

Other than the Primera the Mondeo was the best handling car in it's sector at the time. I spent 5yrs driving most stuff the miserable repmobile sector had to offer in the early 90s for over 1/4million miles so I've got a reasonable idea.

I had one in the shocking almost neon green which fitted in very well with it's weekend role as a 'rave mobile' It even matched my fractal t-shirt colour.......

IIRC a clutch change on a mark one was expensive so this probably accounted for a lot of them being scrapped. I had a 1.8 diesel mark one on an L plate about ten years ago. I thought it was a pretty decent car to be fair.

^^^^ This is true. They rot from the rear arches forward. A lot of MK 2's are now rotting away as well.

Maybe I am being a bit harsh about when they were brand new but imo they were nothing special despite the reviews.

Old ones are almost as bad as the Vectra's of that era

Clutch changes on them aren't particularly difficult, have to drop the subframe unless you cheat a bit

A friend in the trade picked a 1.8 up recently for £50 with 4 months test on it. It was so awful to drive that he scrapped it when the MOT ran out, it would have cost peanuts to put through the test...

My dad had one as a company car many years ago - he was pissed off that he never got the upgrade he wanted so he tried his hardest to destroy the Mondeo. The damn thing just wouldn't die!!!

What have you drive to compare them too ? A Primaera of that ilk is 100x the drivers car a mondeo with all its wallowy undeersteering nastiness is.

Or the captive nut starts spinning. Don't forget it's a PITA to realign the damn thing when reinstalling it without the special tools.

Good car overall though, but the Mk2 managed to better it without too many things being different.

Too true. Ford should hang their heads in shame. The rustproofing on their 90's cars was appalling. Think KA, Escort, Fiesta, Transit Van. Bloke at work has a mark two T reg Mondeo and the rear arches on that are very rusty.
