Twice today (on a 200 mile round trip) I have gone past Continental GT's (one blue convertible and one silver coupe) driving strangely.

They seem to enjoy driving at around 50mph on the inside lane for a few miles, letting traffic pass by with ease, caravans and the like overtaking with ease..... I thought 'makes sense, those things must be terrible on fuel'.

After driving down the road for 5 miles or so, the aforementioned bentley tears past me at 100+ (all speeds and times are approximate, you pedants laugh )

Then, further down the road again, the same car is once again driving at a snails pace on the inside lane.

Just wondering if this is normal behaviour? Showing off? Broken cruise control?

Even the Clio I was driving is able to drive at a steady consistent 79ish mph, why can't (or wouldn't) someone driving s bentley do the same?

They're probably paying attention one minute and getting distracted the next. Or they're just hiring them and drawing attention to themselves. I nearly got killed by a bunch of idiots who'd hired cars for a wedding. One came up behind me in the outside lane flashing at me to move over, as I did another came charging up my inside. Then they all slowed down so I ended up passing them again.

Probably just enjoying the wall of acceleration these sort of cars deliver.

You mean to say you've never been pootling along at a steady 70/80 in a decently powerful car and thought, I'll just squeeze it for a bit down here to make myself smile?

I wouldn't be leptonising it with lots of other peeps about on the road but with a big powerful car like that, the surge of acceleration is more fun than the feeling of cruising at speed,

Different league performance wise (~300/350bhp cars verus a 550/600 one) but always found myself grinning more often in my 540 or VR4 or bro's old 3200GT when accelerating than at any other time.

A short burst of acceleration up to a decent whack before talking to yourself and bringing it back down to sensible speed was always an effective way to keep a four hour weekly commute up and down the M1 vaguely interesting...
