Thinking of trading up my Master Control Chrono (Mecaquartz) for a JLC Master Date. The Master Chrono is quite rare, dates from the late 80s and is a bit of a curiosity with its quartz movement but mechanical chrono and sweep second hand. The Master Date is of course a fully automatic, slightly larger at 37mm dia. and newer. What do you think?

This is my Master Chrono Mecaquartz.

The Master Date.

Chalk and cheese really. Deciding between a classic and interesting chrono or a modern watch without complications. So it's just personal taste really...

Well technically I believe the Date, Month & Day are complications but I take your point. I do like my Mecaquartz...

Given that my Master Date is actually up for sale at the moment, I obviously think you should go for the Master Date ... wink

Personally I would take the Master Date in a heart beat.

The Master date is lovely, the mecaquartz is probably of narrower interest if you want to sell, but the mecaquartz in general, (either Omega, IWC, Brietling etc all had models using this style, if not the same, movement,) do have a bit of a niche following. Having said that, the 34mm size may not be to everyones liking either.

Personally, if you're thinking of 'upgrading' and you like the Master Date then go for it - it's a very nice watch. I'm not too struck on the peripheral date display - but that's just a personal thing, other than that it's classic.

Well I got my Master Chrono out to wear this weekdn and it needs a new battery. So I think I'll get that serviced/new battery and keep it. Might look at a dress watch too wink

p.s. any recomendations for someone to replace the battery in my JLC in London/Berkshire?

Of course an alternative, which rather appeals to me, is to sell the mecaquartz and look out for an automatic Master Chronograph. Very similar style, which of course I like, but it's an automatic movement in a 40mm case. However like my mecaquartz there aren't many on the secondhand market. scratchchin

But how long will it be before you want the Auto Master Chrono and the Master Date?

For me, the Master Date is the consummate dress watch. If I could find/afford/justify one I'd have one in a heartbeat.

Just popping out to find tertius's ad....
