Retained Number Plates

What happens at the end of the 12 months if you have a retained plate?
Do you get a reminder from the DVLA or is it up to you to pay the next years fee before losing the plate?

My Father received a retention notice a month ago for one of his plates (it was about 20 odd quid)

Usually about 2 weeks before the 12month period expires.

You normally get a reminder, but if you haven't you can send the cert in with a cheque for £25 to DVLA.
If bought online you can even do it from their website.
