What car with a difference?
Discussion
Afternoon folks,
Here is my situation:
I've just moved to a less affluent area in the lovely city of Glasgow. It's by no means the the worst area in the city but I'm having some worrying thoughts concerning my car.
I currently drive a 2003 VW Mk4 Golf R32, it's by far and away the best car i've ever owned and is at least 6 times more expensive than any previous cars i've had. My car is easily the nicest car on the street and i'm worried about getting the wrong type of atttention. Theft seems less likely but I don't really want it getting vandalised either. (There isnt' really any secure parking nearby.)
I'm not really sure that I want to suggest this, but i put it out to you pistonheads.com to come up with a performance car, 25MPG+ which can go unnoticed in a less affluent area of a city? Obviously, nothing is full proof and my Golf may never even be bothered but it's a good what car anyway...
I'm approaching 25 and so insurance is generally acceptable on most things.

How often do you use the Golf? Could you not find some storage/a lock up/garage near by to rent? Then just walk or cycle between home and the garage?
A friend of mine did this for a few years while at Uni as he was concerned his Integra would be targeted on his street, worked really well!

There are a huge number of cars with good performance that go completely unnoticed! Volvo V50 T-5, Skoda Octavia V-RS and Fiat Stilo Abarth 5dr all spring to mind as being quite anonymous!
As is a Golf R32! I'd have thought a Golf R32 is one of the least noticeable performance cars out there, and is therefore perfect for the OP already!ETA I'm not sure where you're living, but I've friends who live in some rougher areas of Glasgow's East End and have some of the nicer cars in the street (TT, Boxster, Golf GTI) - they never get touched. The local toe rags probably either like the cars, or think the owners are "somebody" so don't mess with them.

Or so it would appear. In fact, R32s are a very big target for car theives - they know what an R32 is and many intend to take advantage of its' attributes whilst engaged in other illegal activity.
I think R32's stand out quite a lot! with petrol heads and general public alike!Conclusive stuff guys....
It's the East End i'm in, Haghill. That is good news with regards to your friends, perhaps I'll just see what happens with it on the street.
I'd agree the R32 isn't exactly screaming out as a good car (in the same way as an E46 M3 would for example) but it doesn't exactly look like a 1.4 Golf.

I'm fairly sure R32's along with S3's and EP3 Type R's are all very common for thieves to target. They are notorious for being stolen in certain areas like Leeds and Bradford to name but two. Saying that, I don't think changing to another hot hatch would make all that much difference, still more likely to get vandalised than your standard a to b. Something like a debadged RS Megane 225 in black, or an MPS as has already been said would be a better shout hatch wise though.

Aaah, outer Dennistoun.Hopefully you should be ok on the street, it's a better area than it used to be. My mate's bright red 225 bhp TT is certainly noticeable and survives life in Garthamlock, as did the Boxster in Shettleston and nice Golf GTI in Easterhouse - people from those areas would consider you posh for living in Haghill

...it's a sad state of affairs when a Golf "stands out" compared to the utter rubbish most people drive. Nowadays, when you tell someone you have a petrol engine larger than a 2.0-litre, the first comment they make WILL be about fuel economy.
I was held-up by a 1.3CDTI Meriva doing 40 in a 60 this morning...after seeing that they take 17 seconds to get to 60, I can understand why!

Still think this would work! Consider it...A friend of mine did this for a few years while at Uni as he was concerned his Integra would be targeted on his street, worked really well!
