coilovers - working out required spring legth - advice neede
Discussion
Hi
I just need confirmation - are my thoughts correct.
I'm fitting coilovers to my TVR S which will be used for both motorsport and road, I'm starting off (after much reading on various posts) with 450lb/in front and 375lb/in rear. However I need advice on the length to purchase.
The largest distance between the adjustable platform and the top spring mount is 8"but to allow adjustment in both directions I believe I should have the platforms about 1/2" above this. The spring will need to be long enough to be compressed to give a preload of (near?) the weight of the car acting on the spring. The coils should be sized so that on max compression of the shocker they do not become coilbound (Max stroke 3.5" but the bumpstop begins at 2.5")
So say if the front corners weigh near 250kg = approx 550lb the spring will compress 1.22" (550/450)and I'm looking for a max start compressed length of 7.5"
then should I look to purchase 9" (possibly too long) or 8" having the platform raised to suit and giving more avilable lowwering and less raising.
The rears carry less weight but are softer and give similar dimensions as the front.
