I know a few drivers who occasionally forego the flameproof socks as they can be a bit itchy, but no one has ever openly pondered the wearing of gloves.
I love the "I know about the fire risks" comment too. No, no you clearly don't.

for now at least, but if you go to europe ( even on a national A msa event) i.e. spa you'll need full upto date fireproof underwear, gloves and boots all to the current regs..the msa tend to be a year or so behind, so I expect shortly it will be mandatory in the uk.
In theory you could currently race in nothing but your race suit and helmet, but i dont fancy trying to get out or a burning car or even undo a harness if my hands are on fire..
even the wrc rally boys who get away with fireproof t-shirts in the hot rallys still wear gloves
Personal choice. It is recommended to wear gloves but you take responsibility for your own safety and make the call.
This kind of thing is incredibly rare but its worth noting that although his hands were burnt through gloves he was able to make an escape, without gloves you are simply going to be in to much pain to do much to help yourself:

There was a death in the US a few months back were a fuel line running inside the cockpit of a car burst and ignited. The driver had all the right kit but still burnt to death as the pin had not been pulled from the extinguisher so when he pulled the handle to trigger it nothing happened.
This kind of thing is incredibly rare but its worth noting that although his hands were burnt through gloves he was able to make an escape, without gloves you are simply going to be in to much pain to do much to help yourself:
