Isn't it just common sense..

That you face oncoming traffic when you're on foot in the absence of a pavement?
I mean, I'd rather face what will surely kill me if I don't get out the way.
The pillock out for a run (well, trot) with his kids must have some sort of special rear vision because that f
king massive tractor was damn close to him.

Well it depends really.
Depending on the curve in the road there are situations where it will be safer to be on the 'wrong' side of the road.

In my experience people who rant about 'common sense' refer to the ability of people to apparently being able to read their thoughts/gut-feeling and agree with everything they think and have the ability of hindsight before something happens e.g. why they vote Labour etc.
I think the term you want here is 'foolish' or some variation thereof

It's not just about you seeing the car but the car seeing you. You also have the advantage of ears to hear a car from behind. The pedesrian needs to be in a position that gives them the best opportunity of not being hit, and that will sometimes be on the side of the road with moving vehicles behind them.PurpleMoonlight said:

So you're agreeing with me - get out of the way if something, like a massive f
king tractor, is coming towards you. Why didn't you say. There's a country lane nearby (link below) that I occasionally use to walk the dog. If I was walking on the right around a right hand bend the oncoming traffic tends to hug the hedgerow and as there's zero visibility I wouldn't stand a chance. In this situation I would walk on the left so I get a better view of oncoming traffic. There's also a semi-usable verge.

However, on left hand bends and straight roads I agree with the OP.

Because that is not what you said.
king tractor, is coming towards you. Why didn't you say. You made the blanket statement that a pedesrian should always face traffic, which I disagree with.

Ok, based on the comments so far I revise my original comment - Is it not foolish to assume that faster moving vehicles are always able to avoid colliding with pedestrians and that the onus should be on the pedestrian to be proactive in their position on the road in order to maximise their safety?http://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=53.095187,-1.180494&a...

More seriously, what about a blind right hander? Would it not be better to be left side so you have a better view and oncoming cars are not surprised by you? And of course there might not be a place to jump to on the right hand side of the road?
Not that I'm saying Mr Pillock was not being a pillock of course
