So what next?

I need a car with 4 doors, that does c20mpg +, is german, that has a good blend of speed and handling...

Max budget is £20k and I dont want anything more than 5 years old...

Suggestions please......

If the OPs bored of a 535d after a few months, then an A6 will bore the OP after a few days

Sorry I can't offer much in the way of alternatives to your 535d

E55 amg has to be a strong contender, audis are not really my thing, just dont like the way they feel....even the rs4 and s5 left me kind of cold.....i had hoped after all the rave reviews that a mapped 535d wasthr ultimate all round car but having cpme from a 997 carrera2 it has bored me after just 3 months even though it is certainly a very competent car.....

An amg of sorts deffo appeals.....

From the lack of quality feedback this is obviously a difficult choice.

5 years ago who'd have thought that a diesel would be so hard to replace.

I'm stumped too.

How about chipping what you already have? scratchchin

Thats true, the 535D is a very capable car and even more so when chipped (mine had been done by DMS). On a private test track I had 174mph indicated on my Road Angel. There are few cars that will do that, let alone a diesel.

If I were staying with a similar car, it would have to be either an M5 or M3.

Not really any quicker
Significantly thirstier

But, it sounds better.

However, moving to a 550? Might as well get an M5

How about an Alpina B3? I know this is a coupe but a 4 door would be cheaper (if you could find one!).

And why not? Drive it like a normal car and you'll easily see +20 mpg on a long run. Best I've had was a shade over 27 with cruise control set to 70.

20 MPG is the problem.
I would say an M5 but they do not give 20 MPG.

I have an RS6 albeit a lot older than 5 years old.
I run it on LPG (previous owner converted it) and this makes it affordable fuel wise.
I had an E61 530D for a year or so, I know where you are coming from regards the diesel.
The BMW is a great car but it does not stir the soul when you give it some beans.
Get an M5, convert it to LPG and then have the best of both worlds.

No point.

5 series (certainly LCi with SAT) is a better car with a better gearbox.
