steamy demist vents

hi, I just returned from a 40 mile round trip including about 20 mins in traffic in a city centre after the 1st 20 miles. It was raining heavily all of the 1st half of the journey and the roads very wet.

During the traffic section I stopped and turned off for 5 minutes. After restarting I had a bit of condensation on the inside of the screen, turned on the demist to be completely steamed out - the whole screen became steamed up and you could actually see steam coming out of the demist vents, before I turned the fan up.

So my question - could the very damp demist have been caused by water entering a 'dangling' heater vent intake pipe which had fell off the inside of the bonnet (left hand side from within car), or am i into a heater matrix......

I tried recreating a very hot car by running it for 10 minutes up the road, then leaving it idling for 20 minutes (whilst watching temperature and the heater box from within the footwell. No signs of damp except a bit of condensation in a couple of guages, which looked like old moisture.

Very confused?? amyone else suffered this with a dangly air intake vent?

On my car (no two are the same etc. etc.)the two tubes under the bonnet feed the two "eyeballs" on the centre console, fresh air only. The air for screen/demist and eyeballs in the footwells is drawn from inside the car, up behind the dash somewhere straight into the fan.
