Well, dropping her off at Robs tomorrow morning for a couple of weeks(wont take that long, but he has other projects on, and its easy for me to drop her off now coming all the way from Yorkshire on route elsewhere)

Fingers crossed all goes well, and its as good an upgrade as i am expecting, 125 miles run back to find out and enjoywoohoo

Hasn't tests shown 45mm trumpets/72mm plenum to do virtually nothing for 400's..?

I put the same on my fairly modified 450 (see profile) - cost the best part of £1k inc. 45mm inlet manifold - and only managed to get an extra 10BHP, and that's from a rebuilt 4.6 with aftermarket ECU/remapping.

IMO I would suggest you forget these, and spend the money elsewhere - as I believe that unless you were looking to be revving v.high (prob. 6000+), then you will see little/no benefit top-end whilst losing low-down torque.

I fitted V8D stage 4 heads, ported inlet, 45mm shortened trumpets etc and gave a 70 bhp increase at the same RR, I think it must have taken steroids for the 2nd run laugh.

wow really???so it is actually possible to get a 400 to make the same power as a 500!!!how much and what will u have to do to get near 300hp from a 400???

Frog The HC means High lift cam don`t know the spec ,pocketed pistons and i think double valve springs..
The only reason your going for the MC1 cam is its touch and go it will hit the pistons ..If you had the pocketed pistons you could go for the Stealth cam..

We've all got opinions on this subject and i do take what you are saying, but at the end of the day, i have currently a totally restricted 3.9,i discussed what was considered worth while and what wasn't with Rob, and basically which road to go, without what we considered wasting money for very little gain.

I am happy with the choices we've made and agreed a tidy price for this lot,and there is no doubt it will be totally improved engine and Rob's workmanship will ensure that.clap

It seriously cost you 1k for a 45mm inlet 45trumpet base and 72mm plenum? (ouch:-)), the 45mm trumpets and a matched inlet manifold are where the biggest gains of the three are, around 20hp gain, this is based on using ported heads, the plenum is worth about 5-10, again based on a 400, so a total of 25-30hp, if you only gained 10 from all three parts there must be a fault elsewhere that is ready to unleash some more power for you!

Parts (45mm manifold - 45mm trumpets/base - 72mm plenum)
Labour
Remapping Emerald

...came to around £1k. (although had stepper removed and IACV installed instead, included within that).

When you look at the before/after..:

...then you can see that the torque band has been shifted up by about 400rpm and is *marginally* higher (now 330lb.ft)...

I discussed this here, and have come to the conclusion that the cam characteristics meant that gas flow was not being limited by the 38mm trumpets (or was borderline).

I think the question resolves to:

Does a 4.0l with it's given cam characteristics flow enough for 38mm trumpets to become a bottleneck, and therefore warrant the increase to 45mm across the whole intake and the plenum bored out to 72mm..?

On my 4.6l with TVR885 cam - it would appear apparently not (at least not when mapped on 95ron).

And while the stealth cam is obviously a different profile to the TVR885 (and presumably has the torque at a higher rpm?), there is the reduction in displacement as compared to mine...

I would have thought that at a lower displacement - you would require quite a hot cam (ie. hotter than Stealth or 885) to hit this bottleneck...? [Please note, this is IMO based on my upgrades and experiences]

Dependent on the starting point (standard TVR 38mm "tubes") - I would like to compare the benefits of upgrading trumpets only to 38mm (with their improved shape, shorter height etc) vs. upgrading everything to 45mm at much greater cost...

With regards to the plenum, there was a thread here over the last 1-2 months (resurrected?), where someone said they had been testing plenums on the 400's back-to-back, and the 72mm achieved virtually no gain.

My point to the OP is that he may be able to save himself a lot of money and gain the same or almost as much by simply upgrading to aftermarket 38mm trumpets - as it may be that 45mm is too large for the 4.0l/cam set-up, and may actually result in slower gas speeds which might negate any notional gains...

Be a shame to spend hundreds of pounds up front, to find out they achieved v.little gain (speaking from experience here...;))
