I was nudged from behind today in a queue of traffic, literally just the car behind tapped me on the back bumper. I thought I'd stalled at first then realised the car behind was very close and the guy driving was looking a bit sheepish. Bearing in mind it's a black car and my rear bumper is quite scratched anyway from minor parking bumps and loading a drumkit in and out, but there is a new series of scratches about 6-8" long along the very bottom lip. I have the guys name, address, number and reg, but don't know what to do next. Part of me just wants to write it off as a part of life, but then another wants an imperfection caused by another driver to be corrected! I was thinking of getting the rear bumper resprayed before I sell the car next year. Should I just get a chipsaway quote and see if the guy will settle that? Or call my insurers and get them to claim on his policy and maybe I might even get a full bumper respray that way? I just don't want my excess or claims history affected!

I'd ask him to pay the £100 odd quid for the repair. Not really helping anyone by going through insurance.

Yeah to be honest I'm tempted to do nothing, I'll take another look in the morning at the scratches. I'm not going to get insurance involved as I know we will both be screwed over by them. If it was a dent or panel damage, bit different but bumper scratch / scuff is borderline on shrugging it off or maybe get a few quid towards a chipsaway type touch-up. This is how I'd hope to be treated...

You'd better inform your insurance of the crash, remember to ask for a like-for-like hire car and expect the garage to take 3 weeks. Then you should put in a claim for the whiplash you're suffering, remember, you're the victime here you deserve it after that nasty accident.

Or just get a few quotes from reputable garages and see if the bloke will cover the cost.

Even mention the damage to your insurance company(even if it is his fault) and your premium will increase next year.
Get the cash off him for a panel respray.

I had a lady run up the back of my Hilux, fairly hard, when I was stopped at an intersection. It was down hill, & she was stopped, but must have lost concentration, let the brakes go, & rolled into the back of me.

There were only a couple of minor marks on the ute, but I did pull some of her radiator out with my tow bar, as we separated.

I thought she had been punished more than enough for a moments inattention, helped her out of the middle of the road, & left.

Ditto, in a jam, had lady in an old escort bump into the back of my car - I got out, she looked absolutely petrified (I wouldnt be harsh in saying that they looked like they may not have had much spare cash)- anyway, despite a rather hard (feeling) bump, there was no visible damage or bent metal beneath (seems the foam in the bumper did its job) so I just told her not to worry and got on with sitting in the jam!

It all depends on how precious you are about a car, if it already has a few battle scars, I would just forget it!

This. It's not worth the effort.

If someone tapped my snotter I'd shake their hand and drive off - might be a bit more annoyed if it were the Picanto.

Had this happen in Leeds to me, was in traffic with the handbrake off, lass behind bumped me very low speed, just i just rolled slowly. Stuck the handbrake on got out, had a quick check of the van no damage.

The lass of the car was going hysterical almost in tears, i told her not to worry there was no damage on either vehicles.

I carried on my way as normal !

The irony of course is that if you do let your insurer know then your premium will rise. This, over a few years, will probably equate to more than the cost of the repair.

Sue them as they have damaged your car and this cannot be tolerated you must also scream and shout and be really really angry.

You cannot under any circumstances let this slide

It is the worse thing that could ever happen in the entire world.

You cannot even think for a moment its just a scratch

Apparently

As someone else said. If you're after spraying the bumper anyway I think seein if this guy will go halves on that you've done ok, and more importantly, you've been reasonable.

I remember once driving to a dealership on my way to swap cars (I'd just bought a new one) when about 2 miles away, after I had flashed someone coming the other way to allow them to turn right, I felt a bang, and my car went forward. Sods law that it would happen when I was on the way to pick up a new car. I got out to examine, and saw that it was a Fiesta van with a smashed headlight and bent bumper behind me. A young lad got out and immediately apologised, and looked very upset about it. I examined the damage on mine - I had a tiny little mark that was actually difficult to spot on it.

He asked me what I wanted to do. I just replied, nothing mate, doesn't matter, and drove off leaving his smashed vehicle on the road, and went off to get my new car hehe
