3rd to 5th question
Discussion
I sometimes do this if I'm trying to push on and then settle into a cruise, rather than bother with going to 4th and then 5th.
I have a new clutch but each time I get a crunch if I delay engaging 5th up to 3 seconds, so reluctantly I'm going to start always engaging 4th first as the 'box appears to require this and because I don't want to damage it.
Just wondering if anyone else has the same experience?

You might want to stick to slotting it through all the gears as they are thought to be weak in some areas

Happy to be correct, but 5th still has a synchro so it shouldn't crunch at all.
What happens if you come out of 3rd and immediately put pressure towards 5th (clutch disengaged of course). If it crunches then too, then it sounds like a synchro problem.
Will give that a try again but prior to new clutch would go in no problem, which is why I'd suspected the synchro. I thought all gears would be affected if that were the case though? What happens if you come out of 3rd and immediately put pressure towards 5th (clutch disengaged of course). I had a similar problem, 4th to fifth a bit crunchy, 3rd to 5th - horrible!
New gearbox solved all of the above.
The syncro failing on 5th gear is apparantly a fairly common problem with this gearbox, my car only had reached 8500 miles when it was replaced earlier this year, thankfully for me it was covered under warranty with Fernhurst
