ST155 Smoking - Help please
Discussion
Hi, I have a Mondeo ST155 which I noticed yesterday is running a bit lumpy and has started smoking under acceleration. Seems to be ok when cold, apart from an initial bit of rattling noise when it first fires up. But then when up to temperature it starts being smokey, the more acceleration the worse it is.
Been checking some past posts on here and I'm guessing it may be the EGR valve? If so, what is it? And where is it located on the car? Also, how much are they?
Or if there are any other possible problems it could be caused is.
Thanks in advance!

That is your EGR valve, or exhaust gas recerculation valve to give it its full name. It does exactly what it says it does and recirculates gas back to your engine.Been checking some past posts on here and I'm guessing it may be the EGR valve? If so, what is it? I changed mine a few weeks ago because my car was doing the same thing.
If you remove the dip stick from the car then the engine cover should just pop off. At the front is your EGR valve. Its easy to do, Me and my Dad did mine in about half hour. Cost about £120 but fixed the car straight away. You can remove it completely and fit a blanking plate as you dont need an EGR valve, but if you wanna mess around with your cars engine thats up to you.
Have a look on www.stdrivers.co.uk there are loads of threads relating to it with pictures and everything.
Hope that helps you a bit mate!

Thats great, thanks! Will give it a go. Had wondered where something like that would be placed. Doesn't sound quite as expensive as I was expecting either, so thats a bonus!
Do you know if its possible to just clean them, or is it a case of if it goes its gone?
You can clean them, but there is a valve inside which is really hard to get to. I did clean mine and it worked for about 10 minutes before it started again. I would just replace it mate. At least then you not just waiting for it to happen again.Do you know if its possible to just clean them, or is it a case of if it goes its gone?
The jaguar part is cheaper than the ford part I'm given to understand. Go on St drivers forum to get part number.
edited to add; what I mean is that Jaguar sell an identical part (the egr valve) for their cars (that have the same 155 engine as yours) but it's quite a bit cheaper. Exactly the same part; just a different part number (and you buy it from Jag not Ford). Worth looking at if you're going to supply the parts or do it yourself.

Have replaced the EGR valve, and also the big pipe leading to it, as I'd heard those could also be problematic.
But its still not cured the problem. Hoping its not the injectors as they were only replaced about 2 years ago. It may be that there is something clogging them, or that one of the injectors has lost its coding.

Seems to be the wrong colour for burning oil. Its a black/grey colour suggesting overfuelling.
Just had it to Ford who cant find anything wrong with it either. They've re-initisalised the injectors, and says its running fine, but a little bit of smoke. But that might be just around town. Will be picking it up Monday and trying it out.
If its still smoking after that then I'm completely stuck!

Managed to find and clean the Maf sensor, didn't make no difference though!
Have however last night noticed that when I rev it, there is some smoke coming from the back of the engine bay! From somewhere underneath the metal cover ove the turbo. Had looked in that area for an burst pipes but couldn't see anything untoward, but then it wasn't running at the time.
