Quote from Evening Standard mag from last night. If he were Mayor of London for the day "I'd abolish (sic) all cars. They spread pollution and are noisy and unpleasant."
On the basis that you're noisy and unpleasant and also an over-paid @@@@, can we "abolish" you too, whilst you're shopping in "local shops" because you "hate big shops and supermarkets". Unless it's Fenwick's buying your wife presents, of course. You pretentious @@@@.

Too easy a target.

However when the BBC were looking to cut costs I did cross my fingers...

He may well be a knob but I agree with him. When I was in Italy several cities banned cars on some days and it was great. The sense of space and lack of noise was amazing and brought people out in their thousands.

So im not the only one who's noticed he thinks slower than he....talks...and has..to...make everything sound...soooooo....DRAMATIC!!!!...from time to time

Never mind the fact London's buses are louder and more polluting than its cars, why let facts get in the way of a good little agenda.

Not surprised, with all the speed bumps, traffic lights, bus lanes etc all put in on purpose to put you off of driving there. Seems to have had the desired effect.

He's a tit. And he allegedly had a part to play in the UK banks crisis a few years back as some of his rumours being spouted on the BBC affected share prices too.

Just another pretentious cock journo.

If the BBC sacked him we might save enough to get half of Friday Free Practice 1 back on next season....

Er, has he actually ever seen a modern car?? In about 1955 i would have agreed with him, but i hardly call the typical modern car either noisy or unpleasant! Most are so quiet you can't even hear them coming in town, and quite often the stuff coming out the tailpipe is actually cleaner than the air going in (especially when following the knackered old buses we still use for "public transport")

I dont think theres any allegedly required, his sensationalist reporting pretty much started the run on Northern Rock. Many banks have historically had to be bailed out by the BofE in the past with short term loans but it never got that much attention as journalists mostly were responsible and knew it wasnt really in the publics interest to cause a panic. Peston on the other hand is a cock of the highest order and wanted the attention.

Looking back now at all the alarmist reporting leading up to the financial crisis it does seem that everybody saw it coming, or wished it to come, and the banks and the economy just followed suit out of a desperate desire to not embarass the BBC or something.

Peston's your perfect BBC person though. Complete wishywashy knob.

The alarmist reporting exacerbated the crisis a great deal. It was never going to be good but it could have been much easier if people werent whipped up into a frenzy of panic.

The whole financial system survives on confidence and has done for years, the confidence that banks and the goverment will back their money. No bank can repay all of its money and no goverment can either. Thats not how they work.

On the flip side, it was going to crash anyway at some point and if it looked like it took the entire media, all economists and the Government completely by surprise due to a lack of reporting we'd all be blaming them for being ill prepared.
