the old girl has developed a bit of a noise, started a week or two ago and i first thought the belts were getting knackered and squeeky so tryed a bit of wd40 and that queitened it down for a couple of journeys but then noise returned and seemed worse so replaced belts with some new ones and still not sounding right got a proper whirring noise when up and down on the revs ,don't know now if its belts or water pump bearings or alternator etc.

shot a bit of video on the phone so you can hear it .

any thoughts/idea's/solutions welcome

Run the engine with the belts off

is the noise gone?

Is it worse with the lights etc on (loading the alternator)?

Check the tensioner roller for harshness.

Belt tensioner pulley or idler pulley would be my guess, had me stumped for a while when a 6 month old one failed on me. Sounded horrendous too.

Had ever so slightest, barely perceptible roughness to the bearing. Replaced, noise gone. Just a bit of a bummer to get to thats all.

Are you meaning the tensioner on the cambelt snotrag ..?
When running engine with alt belt and power steering belt off it's fine no dodgy noise at all , have had a tensioner pulley go before and that was a right rough rumble /rattle sound .
Will strip belts off later and have another rumage .

Ah I see, yes, makes sense now. So it wont be that. In which case water pump would be a good bet. Can you feel any roughness in the pulley?

What do the bearings in the Alternator and PAS pump feel like then?
