Dementia / Alzheimer's

My dad has early dementia/Alzheimer's we think.
He has been assessed but unfortunately he always passes the tests.....just, so no further action has been taken.
He is 77, he was a builder and built the house he lives in only a few years ago. He is in the process of doing an extension on a new house but he has forgotten how to do anything to do with building!
I wouldn't say he is really bad, he just gets very confused and can't see things in front of him, he went to make a cup of tea last week and the first time he couldn't see the teabags and the second time couldn't see the milk.
I've been with him today at Goodwood, he wanted to go to the toilet before we left so I took him over and went into the ladies myself, when I came out he was nowhere to be seen and I could see he wasn't with the group we had just left, I looked around and saw him in the complete opposite direction wandering around, I called him and he came back looking very confused. During the day I was telling a friend of something that happened years ago to him and he denied all knowledge telling me I was thinking of someone else, when I'm 100% certain it was him, I questioned my sister tonight to see if she remembered it and she did.
Obviously I don't live with him so don't know what he is like day to day I just hear via my hubby who is working with him and his wife that keeps me up to date, but he is going downhill fast it seems.
His wife managed to get him an emergency appointment at the hospital on Monday but as she is away I am going to take him. I've heard there is medication he can take that will delay any further deterioration but I don't know anything about these drugs or how bad he needs to be to get them so any help is appreciated.
