Sadly, two Britons have been killed in a road accident on the island of Kuredu.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14435274

Now I spent two weeks on that sthole of a Butlins Holiday Camp scuba diving some years ago (it was the worst two week away of my life). Aside from the fact is has one very short road and one very small truck, how the he'll do you get run over on an island the size of a football pitch unless you are very pissed and being very silly?

My money is on the fact they were trying to escape and didn't make it past the barbed wire, the RTA is simply a diversionary tactic.

Maybe they were knocked off their quad bikes by a polar bear?

We've stayed there - long before it was all inclusive and long before it was a spa resort and certainly before they've built all those cabins on stilts.

Idyllic when we were there -

As you say - a short bit of road. There's got to be more to this than meets the eye.

Could it be anything to do with how the locals think of westerners?

"You are swine” and “the children that you bear from this marriage will all be bd swine,” a tourist couple renewing their marriage vows in the Maldives were told in a ‘traditional Maldivian’ ceremony conducted in Dhivehi at Vilu Reef Beach and Spa Resort.

“Your marriage is not a valid one. You are not the kind of people who can have a valid marriage. One of you is an infidel. The other, too, is an infidel "

Yep, I remember that.

Seems they'd only be married since Saturday and were being taken back to their villa on a quad bike driven by an employee.

Regardless of my personal thoughts re Kuredu, it's very sad.

I've been reading a biography of a former RAF Navigator who ended up being base commander of RAF Gan - which is now Gan International Airport, The Maldives.

His accounts of the "natives" was that they weren't altogether enamoured with westerners, especially Brits - even then.

I stayed there 15 years ago.

Thought the natives were nice enough.

They've been told for some time that the west has caused the sea levels to rise, and their islands will be underwater soon.

I'd have a chip on my shoulder.

They also didn't like te way they had been shunted around the various islands by the British authorities as they sorted out the RAF's runway requirements.

Butlins to some, but for me Kuredu's a great place, was back there for the 9th time in Jan and will return, each to their own.
From what I've heard it was the managers son who took them on the quad, it's also rumoured that he did a runner to Male when it happened, where he is now being treated, how true that is I don't know, but a very sad situation all round.

Have you tried Butlins Bognor?

It's a lot closer and just as much fun!

So was it some sort of quad crash, then he left them injured, but did a runner himself injured?

Horrendous that you can go on hols possibly for a dream hols and end up like this.

Poor buggers

Poor six month old son they left in the UK that'll grow up never knowing his parents, all because they fancied a nightime shot of a quad.

errm I don't think that is a massive risk to take. Its not like they were base jumping. I don't think it would cross anybodies mind that a quad bike could cause two people to die.

There have been a few fatalities and serious injuries with these things. Maybe people don't treat them with proper respect.

Telegraph article states it wasn't a quad bike - it was one of those buggy jobs (similar to golf buggy) that transport guests around the island. And that they were being driven by someone else who wasn't staff - oops.

Terrible tragedy, was the 2nd day of their honeymoon and they leave behind a 6 month old child. frown

This doesnt add up - how can they have been going fast enough in one of those buggys to cause such a terrible fatal accident? Says they his a tree and died instantly.... surely these things only go about 8 mph max....???

Terrible for them and they're family.

I have been really shocked by the news.

A week last Saturday, I was out washing the car around lunchtime. It was a lovely sunny day, without being too hot. In the distance, I could hear the local church bells in Ripponden peeling and did so again an hour later. I thought to myself that someone was getting married at the church and what a great day it was for a wedding.

Fast forward to reading the headlines in my local newspaper yesterday, reading a comment from the local vicar who I know very well, that the bride and groom he married a week earlier were killed on their honeymoon leaving their 6 month little boy. I felt sick.

My heart goes out to their families. It is a tragedy, perhaps even more so after the high of their wedding.

I did not know the bride and groom, but this one was so close to home that I can't believed this has happened. Terrible. What can I say?
