hi!

ok im a new PH so go easy on me biggrin
i have always had a thing for the mk1 and mk3 capri, and up untill now have not had the chance to get one, but now i do and it doesnt have to be on the road yet as long as i can get it to the driveway (there is an mot station right by my house hehe) i found one car it has been stripped out inside frown just the dash (uncracked!) and door cards remain, there has been a 6 point roll cage fitted bucket seats ect, a custom paint job black with metal flakes, its a 2.8i 136k some random history has had welding that is visible as the carpet ect is missing the floorpan looked ok few bit of rust around plastic plugs, it had not been started in a few months, now the engine i only ran for a few min ans when revved it sounded almost tappety? if it had not been run in a while could this be a lack of oil getting up from it just being sat? the oil level was about half on dipstick and you could see it had just been changed, the rear diff welded up by the prev owner but the car drives fine only when going around really tight corners slowly you felt a bit of a judder? could this be an lsd that needs a service?

anyway i will stop here before people fall asleepsleep

really i want a 2.8i, he is asking 1.2k i was thinking of an offer of 900 maybe a bit more no tax/mot and stripped empty cant be worth more? this way i can take my time and restore her to show condition! but i want one now! rolleyesbiggrinbiggrin

all help already recived is still on my mind biggrin

thanks guys smile

In the Practical Performance Car £999 Challenge this year there should (if he gets his ares in gear) be a Volvo T5 powered Capri. It's at Santa Pod on September 16th if you would like to see it.

you'd be wise to check out your insurance as its tricky to get insurance once a roll cage has been fitted, if you dont declare it your insurance will be invalid.

also driving around daily in a car with a roll cage is a complete pain, and if you do have a small bump and no helmet on your bonce may meet the roll cage = ouch.

Pipe lagging from a plumbers shop may help soften it a bit...

OK, I would be worried if a none runner had just had the oil chanaged for me to see it and it was only 1/2 full, what are they trying to hide ?

valve seals going ?
piston rings going?
mayo in old oil ?

fords are happy when tappy but i woould still be worried

you dont have a LSD any more, even it was fitted to start with, its welded up, its a crude drag racing thing to do and yes going round corners will cause a judder as the wheels try and move at different speeds, hence why its fitted with a diff to start with.

to be honest from what you have said this has been lashed up and ragged silly in a previous life and that would make we walk away unless I was just going for the body, if decent and were going to do a rebuild

tooooooooooooo many ifffffs in my book to be honest.

cheers

thanks stuart the body from what i can tell is in good nick the "bounce" test on all four corners was fine, i should be more specific, they told me they had serviced her about 3 months prior plugs leads filters oil, and she has been laid up thanks to the new tax/insure bullcensored i did run her before checking the oil... clap for me! but yes she has had a full respray so someone spent some money on her, how much should/ could a diff rebuild kit or a seccond hand diff cost me? my only other option for a capri is one that started at a 2.0lazer has had a 2,8 dropped in, in red with the vinyl roof  but the guy seems to know nothing about cars, apart from "it has 22k on the clock so very low milage for the money bud" its been clocked?!

whew! oh and i have found somewhere to do a rebuld on the engine for 170ish quid?

thanks for you help smile

maybe its the rumbling feeling or the fact that you feel like the car is alive i dont know but i want one!

I've had a 2.0Sport with a 2.8 Cologne and running gear. It also had the 4 speed box, 55mph in 1st, 85mph in 2nd, 110mph in 3rd and 140mph in 4th. Still want it back until now (sold it 17 years ago). Ruthless.
I don't know of anyone who will rebuild a 2.8 motor for £170, it's not going to happen please believe me unless they are going to open the bonnet and close it again. Stuff is expensive nowaday, it's £30 minimum to skim a head and there are two on he 2.8. The engines are tappety but not too loud. I don't like the fact that the diff has been welded but hey, it's you decision. Maybe better to buy a 2.0L Laser, make it tidy and see how you get on. Just my opinion and I have a 2.0L myself which is so easy to repair. You can make them faster quite easily too smile

I do recall a 180mph Capri, IIRC was running a YB lump though. Mental thing hehe

The same engine and drive train taken from a 202mph Saphire. Gives you an idea about the Capris aerodynamics eh?

I'd go for a Cosworth V6 and Eaton supercharger from a Jag or even a Jag'/Ford V8. driving

The speedos on Capri's are miles out. I had a "3ltr S" in the early 80's, and while I was doing 130mph my mate overtook me in his SD1 Rover, and he was only doing 115mph.biggrin
