All my fingers are intact......but....
Discussion
I removed the bell housing from the engine when I replaced the seals in my slave. Then we had to use a hydraulic press to seperate the two by pushing the slave out from the inside of the bell housing. It's a bloomin' tight press fit.
When it comes to reassembly put the bell housing in the oven at 60 degrees for 10 mins and the slave outer body in the freezer, makes the job much easier.
If in doubt, ask Mad Mark, he's a legend and was a major support (via PH) to me when I was doing mine under considerable time constraints.
If your fingers are fine then in my view it's either knackered seals in the slave or could be scoring of the sliding elements of the slave. A common indicator is a pool of liquid under the bell housing, however mine was dry both below, and inside the bell housing even though the slave had failed. The failed seal in mine was letting fluid 'pass' within the slave rather than falling out!

Not sure if it'll help but my experiences were logged here:

I've never had a pool under the car.
Last Oct at Spa early on in the day it was a little difficult to get into 1st. Rest of the day no probs.
After returning home and rolling off the trailer, extremely difficult to get 1st to put into the garage......yes its taken 9 months to get around to looking into this job....been building a workshop see...all done now but still other projects gazump car stuff...but Spa 2011 is looming !
Yes there was a dirty oily trace down the shiny face where the 4 allen key screws go in, but still no puddles.

Hi Grant
Just drag your attention to this thread where I took mine out (thanks to MadMark - and contains my usual plethora of pictures).
I would definitely recommend taking the bellhousing off. Once you've got enough rachet extensions and a 10mm (?) ball-ended Alen key on, it's a breeze
Fiddling with seals (?) whilst in situ is not something I would recommend unless you've got a pet Octopus with an HND in Auto engineering

I remember you'd had some experience in the clutch area but not that it involved the slave...ta for the link.
Where did you get your seal kit from ?
Bell housing is already off ish as I'd taken the 10m's out to look inside but left the hyd lines attached when I did so....then refitted with just 1 off finger tight.
I think the bell housing ones, apart from being done up v.FT, were easier to get at than Gbx ones, but then this is on the racer rather than a Cerb so maybe different ?
Hiya,
ordered my Seal Kit from Clever Trevor as they have been the quickest getting the packages out to me.
THEIR SITE HAS CHANGED BUT THIS IS THEIR CURRENT SEAL PAGE(Sorry for shouting).
I ordered an extra Large O Ring seal as well - just in case I buggered it up on my first attempt
Also ordered the Red Grease which I found saved my assembly process from tearing the rubbers to pieces.

Seals arrived today so, as you say Paul, pretty good online ordering service from Clevor Tevor.
Were your slave parts not scored ? This is the reason Ive heard for most Indy's resorting to total replacement rather than refurb.
I ordered two sets as a you mentioned having fun with fitting them (I have some red rubber grease although not the brand sold by CT) and I have a slave in the bell housing on the spare 4.5 that has sat for a while...well since I bought it in...err....I'd have to work out when that was.
