This afternoon I stopped at a pelican crossing and waited until all pedestrians had crossed. When the lights started flashing amber I checked and there were no pedestrians anywhere so I proceeded to pull away slowly when all of a sudden a guy on a mountain bike at great speed cycled from between some bushes at the side of the road straight across the pelican crossing. He then proceeded to abuse me with some hand gestures and was also verbally abusing me.
Who's wrong in this situation?

No it was pouring with rain and he was no where to be seen, he just cycled from between a couple of bushes. If i am wrong fair enough but I just checked on this and he should have dismounted anyway.

I can't count the number of times I have shouted 'you are not a fking pedestrian' at these morons. It changes nothing about their behaviour but it vents the anger.

Not many people do that while I am driving my Defender as they know it will hurt them a lot.

Below is some handy advice regarding cyclists.

Tired of Sharing the Road said:
If you drive on a road occupied by people on bicycles it is likely you have attacked or wanted to attack the cyclist. Confrontations between drivers and cyclist may start out as relaxing, but can quickly take a turn for the worse. Arm yourself with these tips and you can safely overtake a cyclist when the need arises.
•As the angry cyclist approaches you, be ready for action. You must always assume they are approaching to do you harm. Often the angry cyclist may approach you with the bicycle raised above their heads in a striking position.
•Make sudden, fast, wild swinging movements. Make a lot of noise. If you have a can with rocks in it shake it loudly while shouting nonsense in the face of the cyclist.
•Move swiftly from side to side. Don’t stand in one spot or you will get struck.
•Move into the strike and grab the bicycle with your right hand.
•Spin the aggressor around where you are directly behind them.
•Strike them hard in the center of the back with your fist.
•As the cyclist goes down, deliver 3 strong strikes with the bicycle to the knee or back of the legs.
•Throw the bicycle far out of reach of the injured cyclist.
•Get in your car and drive to over the bicycle rendering it useless, and get ready for your next confrontation.

Vehicles are not legally required to stop for cyclists using pelican crossings, after a fashion.

Am i the only one who thinks compulsory cycling training from school age would help eliminate some of these issues? Too many cyclists are told how they have every right to use the road (which they do) but the advice is often very one sided and appears to be telling them to do whatever they damn well please with virtually very little training.

I remember doing cycling at school, i also remember cycling too fast one day over the field beside the school on the way in and hitting a rock and flying about 20 feet into the air as i therefore made the most dramatic entrance to a school ever seen smile

you misunderstand me, old chap. You appear to be making out that it's the size shape and make of your vehicle which scares cyclists into not messing with you, and that all those factors would also 'hurt them a lot'. I don't think they have anything to do with it. Over and out.

Would be a good start though.

I remember everyone at my school taking their bikes in for a couple of weeks at the end of a summer term when we were 10 or 11 and we spent 4 or 5 afternoons teaching those who didn't yet know how to ride a bike how to do so and everyone was taught how to ride safely, a lot of the Highway Code and general cycle maintenance.

The teacher even drummed into us the importance of that last quick lifesaver over the shoulder by making us do it whilst walking around the school during those weeks hehe

Seemed a no brainer to me.

I agree to an extent, but the current school system would make it very difficult; CRB checks, H&S, insurance etc etc. not to mention the root of most of the issues we have with younger people today, the myth of entitlement. Most kids would just blow it off, backed up by their parents. They are entitled to do whatever the fk they like, regardless of the effect it has on anyone else.
