Mrs ShampooEfficent and I are decorating our new place, top to bottom. We're on a budget, and at the moment we can't afford a new fitted kitchen. It's still awfully 70s though, so we want to jazz it up as best we can.

Is there any benefit in getting specific (and expensive) "cupboard paint", over using normal satin finish paint? Obviously it's being sanded and prepped before painting.

The doors are made of MDF with some sort of shiny layer on top, if that makes a difference...

Well, you could go the specific paint route or the specific primer route.

For me, I'd go with some sanding to make smooth and then some USP (universal surface prep) wiped over the top to give a key to the primer. Then I'd use normal paints and primers.

Is just replacing the doors an option? If the paint finish isn't spot on, it might look a little cheap...

I have just carried out a make over on a kitchen in a rental flat. B&Q presently discounting 50% on kitchen units, with door fronts starting at 39 each.
