Would anyone recommendend any particular one? There seems to be quite a number of varieties out there...

Thanks.

Some additional information would probably be helpful, as in what do you intend to use it for. For example, microlight = good environmental sealing

You can't go wrong with anything from Garmin - I've been using the monochrome GPSMAP 196 and smaller GPSMAP 96 for years without any problems - obviously the newer products have a colour screen, and now offering touchscreens as well, but those two older items are still have database support and can be obtained second-hand for very reasonable amounts.

SkyDemon have a VFR offering running on generic windows mobile GPS units, which integrates with their desktop flight planning software, but beware visibility issues with some of the hardware - likewise the Airbox Aware unit, the latter being all but useless in a bright cockpit.

Got to be a Garmin of some kinds. I used to have a 96c which was fantastic. A mate had a 196 and I've played with most versions right up to and including the G1000 integrated flight decks. The user interface really is the best out there and once you've used one Garmin product, they'll all seem very familiar smile

Garmin 695 is very good (hardly 'handheld' though)

I have a Garmin eTrex in my flight bag for emergencies, which I bought in 2001 and I believe they still sell - says something I think. Basic, and no maps, but will do everything you need, and is handheld and waterproof. I also have a GNS 5870 bluetooth GPS receiver for use with my iPad and NavPro with CAA charts - great bit of kit, and cheap too (if you already have an iPad).

I was ready to complain to Transair when I ordered the GNS receiver as I thought they'd forgotten to put it in the box - they are tiny. Think Zippo lighter rather than cigarette box.
