This thread is mean as a collation of all the cars that have surprised PH's younger members by how cheap they can get insured on one for.
Anyway, i digress. I tend to spend my evenings browsing Pistonheads, Autotrader and Money supermarket Looking for cars that are cheap enough to own at the youthful age of 19 (a week today).
(All ins quote figures are based on moneysupermarket, not phoning up.)
Ive found some right strange ones, both oddly cheap and oddly expensive.
Oddly expensive being Evo X at £15k cheapest.
With the cheaper end being Seat Ibiza Cupras £1100 a year and Skoda Octavia VRS's at similar money.
Landcruiser V8 petrols are also around £1500 (possibly the cheapest V8 for a yufff to insure).
Anyway, the reason i thought i would start this thread is that i just found 2 anomalies.
I tried a Jaguar XJ-S 5.3l V12 for a giggle and was quoted £2100 a year for 9000 miles per year!
Was quite shocked, so tried the XJR-S which came back at £2450 PA.
Wow.
Anyone else got a similarly shocking insurance bargain for youngin's?

(Also, as im now mildly tempted, does anyone know how much i should put aside to maintain something like an XJR-S?

I didn't spend quite that much time on insurance websites in my youth, though when I was buying another car at 19, I found that the insurance for a Ford Focus 1.8 Ghia 5dr hatchbook was exactly double the amount to insure an identical value/ age Focus 1.8 Ghia saloon. Needless to say, I got the saloon.

Considering most people my age are paying >£2k for french ecoboxes, i dont see that £2k for an appreciating piece of v12 history. Your only young once, right?

Until something goes bang which is going to cost a grand to fix... Then your V12 History is laid up until you've got the cash to fix it, meanwhile it's still costing £200 a month to insure.

Assuming you're a poor student with no cash of course tongue out. If you're minted then go for it! biggrin

It would be nice to know what the chances of something going bang are. If i did get one (£6k seems top dollar and id be happy to spend that) then i had quite a bit of cash left over from this years theoretical car buying budget (i was meant to be buying a landcruiser so i could tow a box trailer for the family business, but we could get a van instead (although some of my initial car budget would have to go towards it).
P.s. not sure how, but ive just brought the quote down to £1.2k per year, by changing the model to a slightly different one (still a 5.3 liter XJ-S)

Volvo 850 T5s are pretty good for young drivers, I recently ran a quote as an 18 y/o with one year's NCB and it came back at something silly like £1800. Not bad IMO, it's just getting that year's no claims that is the issue.

Minted... Go for it! biggrin

Things will go wrong, no matter how much you spend on the car. Certain components just life expire, and the 5.3 is a tricky engine to work on (have you seen an under bonnet shot?)!

I've got a V8 1999 Discovery which I've had for 18 months as a second car... It's consumed a new fuel tank (LPG conversion so had a pigmy petrol tank in the war wing) the old tank had rotted, new crank sensor, lambda sensors, air suspension compressor, and now needs a new PAS pump as its leaking. Not faults, just items which perish with time and need replacing.

Find yourself a decent specialist garage though, and the repairs needn't cost the earth... And as you say, you'll most certainly have the coolest car in the college car park wink

How handy with spanners are you?

If you don't know your Whitworth from your A/F, then you might be in trouble with the Jaaaaag.

Then again, you are right. You are only young once and if you can afford the juice, never mind the maintenance. Go for it!

What's a 3.2 like for ins?

I remember at GCSE time, quite a few farmers sons turned up for their exams in a tractor as you can drive them at 16.

I'm now 21 and when i come to renew it comes down to £865. It's wonderful.

I'm not seeing this for any of the cars you said... well (+120%) above average quotes for Landcruisers and Cupras... and XJS is insane.

What website are you using to get quotes? The one i'm using returns quotes that are stupidly expensive compared to the quotes you're getting. Im 16 soon so no need for insurance yet but my dad is looking for a car to run and teach me to drive in but even a 1.0 corsa is around £3.5k using the website i'm using (not sure if i can mention names). Going by the comparison website im using, its not worth getting insured until im 18 or 19, but as you can imagine, as ive been on here since i was 10 or 11, i want to get behind the wheel as soon as possible!! Just need a website that returns reasonable quotes! I appreciate that its also about the car, but i cant get a quote anywhere near what you can for the cars youve listed!!

Thanks,

I'm 21 and I'm 900 for a 182. Granted not a piece of history, but a clio. But cheap to run was up in the highlands and hot 35 mpg. It's cheap for parts and to run. I looked at more interesting cars when I was younger bit saved my money. Yes your only young once so spend it on going out. Have a more interesting car to take your mind of children and mortgages in fifteen years.

My tip would be go for diesel. Even hot diesels are relatively 'cheap' comparatively.

FYI OP the insurer you have that quote from may or may not be fantastic. They may or may not have had to try FOUR times to send my dad the correct certificate of insurance when he changed car.
