What's the general view on this?

Bought a Honda Izy 18 months ago and Honda recommend servicing at an approved dealer annually.

I got a Honda service kit (oil, plug and air filter) thrown in with the deal so wouldn't be using an agent anyway.

I didn't service the mower before this season started as the oil is still up to the level and clean, the filter is clean and it fires up first time so spark is good.

I wouldn't bother....

I have several petrol mowers, from ride-ons to push ones, none get serviced. Ever. They've been running sweetly for years and start first pull of the season.

Keep the oil topped up, change it every few years if you feel you must - you'll save a fortune!

A bit like a car - Dealer Service is a precondition of Hondas extended warranty

I realise that, but an agent service is a pointless expense at this stage - given the operating hours of the mower and the condition of the consumables.

It's probably more important to ensure the blade is kept sharp/new. I was told by my local lawnmower shop that I only really need to keep the air filter clean and check the blade is sharp.

you will find a plug change to be pretty important on the izy's- mine needs replacing evrey year to keep it starting and running nicely (although the carb probably needs adjusting too though!)

Follow the good advice on here and diy. I had mine serviced a couple of years ago as it was running badly. Never again, it cost more than my car service. (My excuse is I was working away and only coming home for weekends so my time was precious).
