****ed about notice period!

Hi folks,

I got a job offer 2 weeks ago after an interview and handed in my notice to my boss stating i was giving 2 weeks (no contract of employment and nothing in the handbook so Employment law 1996 says i should give 2 weeks)

However i agreed with my boss as a big project is going on it would be unfair for a new person to walk into that without a bit of ground work, so i said if they are stuck i can do three weeks, just to get the job finished etc.

This was agreed on friday the 5th.

I came in on monday to confirm the final day, the boss had spoken to my old recruitment agency who got me the j0b telling them i was doing a month notice??!!

I never said i would do a month, the boss said i never said 3 weeks, i had said (apparently) that i would do a month for them to help.

This was bks, as i know i never said i would do a month, 3 weeks if needed at the most. I then stated that in the resignation letter i had given 2 weeks, and that the law says that is all i have to give.

There was a lot of you said, i said back and forth, and it was getting heated, so i said stop. the law is clear but i was trying to be helpful. There was long silence between us as neither was going to give in.

The boss then said if i do a month it would be appreciated, and if they get someone sooner i can go asap, i could even go before the 2 weeks if it worked out, so to have an easy life we agreed on that and i informed my new employer of my final day would be the 25th.

I then came in on the tuesday to find the MD had gone on holiday for 2 weeks.....

This as you would imagine left me with a bitter taste, and am really in the mood to leave now as today would be my last day of the 2 weeks notice.

However i am npot an antagonistic type of person and like to be fair etc, however the job we are doing is a shambles, the month timetable will be lucky if its 2, they have no need for me to be here as no major HSE issues will arise in the short time they wont have a competent person.

Its simply petty and trying to cover themselves, which i wouldn't be that bothered about tbh, but i know the only reason the boss was singing a diff tune on the onday was he probably went home, spoke to the chairman over the weekend, and realised he wouldn't have any hse person for the holiday period (can't interview etc) so became an arse after this.

The annoying thing is i know i wont walk out after explaining why, i will just drift along till the last day.

But the stupid thing is, after friday the 2 week with poss of 3 weeks was a good arrangement and i was happy to work away doing a basic handover for a new person, but now i cannot be hooped, just want to go and feel i wont be helpfull after i have left, where before i would have answered questions by the new guy if he needed over the phone etc.

It basically is a metaphor for my whole time here, they want as much as they can get for as little as they can put out, grippy, and abusive of power.

So, what's the downside for you if you walk after the 2 week notice period that you gave them?

I know. My letter of resignation is in duplicate and signed, and states on that i am giving 2 weeks notice form the 5th of August.

So at the end of the day if it goes south i can claim my notice over and i am only here to dort out a few last bits, under no obligation to stay longer and cannot be made to stay legally

But hopefully it will just pass quickly, but its more just soured the last few days here.

But am out of it soon.

Is there no win win situation here ?

I assume that it'll be 8 weeks before the new starter starts, so offer, to come back as a subcontract favour, for one week, with up to 2 days support per month available at an hourly rate that is reasonable, but will encourage them not to want to use too much of you.

The GREAT thing about having nothing in writing is that you can ps off after 2 weeks and stick 2 fingers up, but there's a more profitABLE way.

TBH i wouldn't want to come back, they never listen to anything i tell them anyway (HSE is not seen as important in reality).

My 2 weeks are up so legally i can walk away now, but i have good excuses to work out of office off site and general workers know there isn't much doing, so can have a wee bit of a jolly

Boss is back on monday and see what he is like, if he is demanding i basically have everything spotless and sorted before new start appears (an impossible task as if they werent going to sort stuff i told them about 2 years ago, what will 8 days achieve!) he can fk off, i will take it as it comes, he knows 2 weeks is all i ahve stated in my notice and i was doing a bit more as a favour, he knows he is over a barrel and a bit in the st having no hse on site when i leave, so realised i am quite importantbut it was a bit late now.

Hey ho, its a sunny day and i am out of the office if i want.

This is a good example for me though, i need to be less helpfull in future, and be more looking out for number 1, and just state 2 weeks is all you are getting, sorry if its not the best for you, but i want to go.
