Black wheel

Black wheels - am I the only one that doesn't like them?

To me, they remind me of the base spec / poorly maintained cars that have lost their wheel trims, such as this:





There are a few exceptions, and I have seen some pictures posted where the dark wheels did actually suit the car, but it is very rare and I don't think I have ever seen any where it looks better than the standard wheel colour.

How long before this fashion trend goes out of fashion?

(weren't colour co-ordinated wheels big in the 80's for a while before everyone realised they actually look sh!t!!)

I like black wheels (especially when they are matte black) as I think they suit the car, not that my ford KA would suit them though.

It is indeed an awful trend. It seems to be dying down recentley. What gets me most is when you see an advert for a car that reads; "black paintwork with contrasting black wheels and interior".

How the hell can black be 'contrasting' with black!?

One of my neighbours has just put a set of shiney black wheels on his bright red Golf G60. They replaced an original set of silver BBS alloys and the car now looks pants.

Not a fan of black wheels myself, but I think anthracite/graphite coloured wheels look quite good on some cars...

I quite like black/anthracite finish on some cars. I also like colour coded wheels on some.
The white Manta GTEs got white alloys back in the early 80s to emulate the rally 400s - didn't like the the gold colour with matching wheels though - but white ones also looked good with the later 'Exclusive' anthracite alloys imo
It's like any kind of "fashion" though - it's been around for ages - it will go and then come back again.
It would be boring if every car was silver colour with silver colour alloys

I liked them on my Westfield (although those ones had chrome rims as well) and I like them on Exiges. I'm struggling to think of further examples.

Yes they look rather splendid. Think the graphics help here. I'm not sure it would look right without the rest of the black detail.

ive got a black corsa c with gloss black wheels, theyre the 16" sri 5 spokes so dont look like small steels. they came like that though and i have no preference between black or silver tbh

It depends on the car and the type of wheels ... Some black wheels just scream 'drug dealer', but others make a car look more purposeful. To demonstrate the latter, here is a pic of a VX220 out of the classifieds:

I don't like shiny wheels, but I think as long as they're matt they can look good in any colour.

Shiny bits very rarely look good on modern cars, IMO.



I think my car would look thoroughly odd with silver/grey wheels.
