I don't really understand his comments. He has asked news agencies to change their headlines from the UK to England. Isn't that a bit redundant?
These riots were in the 'UK'. That is the name of our country.
The man is an idiot.
And yet the BBC happily pander to it......These riots were in the 'UK'. That is the name of our country.
The man is an idiot.
s.I like Scotland and I like the Scottish (in general). But this odious pathetic little man needs to sod off. Not only is he bad for Scotland, he's a spiteful, bitter and twisted moron who would love to send Scotland into economic doom. All because he believes in some stupid dogma that its better to be separate than to work together....
He is NOT a good representative for Scotland and its a shame that the otherwise sensible Scottish selected him their political leader.

s.I don't actually take what he said as nationalism, but even if it is it will only serve to 1) make potential copy-cats in Scotland less likely riot under some misguided sense of superiority and (2) provoke the English into wanting to push Scotland away, which again is what he wants.
Either way, tactically very clever, not the work of an idiot.
ETA: Oh an incidentally, in Scotland we also pay our TV licence, we don't believe it's asking for the moon to know what our first minister's say.

The Scottish First Minister said it was unfair of broadcasters to describe the lawlessness as “UK riots” because it was an English phenomenon and Scotland has “no history of this sort of disorder
Obviously never been on the receiving end of a Glasgow "Kiss" or wet haggis! The Scottish First Minister said it was unfair of broadcasters to describe the lawlessness as “UK riots” because it was an English phenomenon and Scotland has “no history of this sort of disorder
The man is far from being an idiot, extremely clever and normally wipes the floor with anyone stupid enough to debate any issues with him.
Of course, when the riots were confined to Tottenham they were desribed as such and when the spread to Ealing, Croyden they were then called the London Riots. They then spread to Bimingham, Manchester etc and I have to say the Beeb for a short period referred to THE English riots whereupon it soon became the UK Riots, which quite clearly was wrong.
Turn it around if you will, say Scotland was rioting, what do you think would be the description, UK, British?? Don't think so.

There are less immigrants there, therefore no riots.
