Hey,

I lived in Cardiff for about a year so know my way around very well but what with living there didn't ever stay in any hotels!

After a room for 2 nights 19/20th aug and I'm after the modern glass type not the traditional cottage type!

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Not exactly a recomendation, but I have stayed in the supposedly 5* glass looking one in Cardiff bay - can't recall the name of it. Its ok, room was comfortable enough, staff were good. Breakfast was buffet style and poor and from what I recall, it was in my view overpriced.

St Davids Spa is the one you're talking about. It was opened by Rocco Forte and run by his hotel group until a few years back when it was sold to a chain of somewhat less grand hotels than Forte's.

I stayed there a couple of years ago and it was fine. The rooms were still up to 5 star standard (imho, I know others disagree), the design still looked fresh and the spa was great especially the hot salt pool.

The restaurant (even when Forte ran it) was always a reputedly a bit crap and overpriced but when I ate there on my last stay it was pretty good.

You can get good deals on laterooms, at rack rates I agree it's not great value.

Depends what standard you are looking for but I regularly stay overnight in Cardiff on business & stay here http://www.futureinns.co.uk/cardiff-hotels
It's nothing flash but it's reasonable, clean and just a short walk away from Cardiff bay & all the restaurants etc.

Cheers guys!

Just after something in the city centre, nice modern room (something a bit special) with city views upto £100 a night!

Anyone stayed in the radison blu or the Maldron? Both look nice!

I live in Cardiff so haven't needed a hotel in the City but 'The Big Sleep' is meant to be very good, it's 'cool and funky' rather than a luxury place though.

If you're after luxury the Park Hotel and the Hilton on Grey Friers road are about the best.

If there's a big event on that weekend it'll be expensive and hard to find a place.

The Radisson Blu is OK, I wouldn't have said it was anything special though and I didn't rate the restaurant, but had good views over the city. Stayed there twice, the last time was beginning of July. The Maldron wan't finished.

If there had been the availability at a half decent price my choice would've been the The Park Plaza, nicely decorated with a good restaurant and bar (not been back there though since I moved away from Wales 2 years ago). It probably won't have the same views over the city as the likes of Radisson Blue etc, but had more atmosphere in my experience.

I stayed here for a week with work earlier in the year, the hotel is very good with ample parking and excellent views from large balconies overlooking the bay, the one meal I had there was ok but a little pretentious and prices to match (thankfully expensed). I wasn't that impressed with the spa facilities and don't remember a hot salt pool but overall not bad. My room was £100 per night inc breakfast but about 10 of us stayed.

A few Blackberry photos..

I stayed at St Davids a few times on business and like it. Ate there once and it was OK but it's easy walking to the bay where you have lots of choice. Always booked thru Superbreaks and never paid anywhere near rack rate, around the £100 mark for double occupancy B&B midweek.

Probably wouldn't stay anywhere else in Cardiff in case I was disappointed!!

Hilton by the castle is fantastic, one of the best hotel experiences I have had in a long time.

If its city centre (rather than bay) you want, I'd go for Hilton, Park Plaza, Marriott, Radisson Blu, Big Sleep in that order of price
